Please put me down for a copy of the book at well. I have a 1998 318i that was imported from Germany with an m44 and I am going to be doing a full m52b28 swap with upgraded tranny, LSD, and suspension. I am basically just waiting for your manual to start on the swap. My dad always said, "No point in doing something unless you're gonna do it right." ;-)

Any idea when the first batch of the new books might ship?

I don't have a ship date yet but I have been working/editing almost daily on it.

Now it is 267 pages long and will be longer before I'm finished.

Note that once I finish, it goes to an independent editor to give input.

Finally I'll give it one last go-over before conversion to PDF and sending to the printer.

It will be worth the wait but it takes time.

Hi Jim,

I was just wondering if there might be an older version of the manual available somehow?

Just wondering so I might be able to use the older version while I am also waiting to purchase the new professionally printed manual. I am still souring a few parts such as an upgraded transmission and LSD for my 318i sedan swap project so I will not start immediately. However if it is a matter of months before the new book is available then I might need to find another solution. I am hoping to make this my spring time project and maybe have it ready sometime this summer.

I really appriciate your reply.

Thank you!

Well I don't have that answer for you.

I'm going this route because I don't have time to support it the old way where I print d on demand and shipped it out.

Plus I have collected a ton of other information that will be included to broaden the appeal to the now ageing E36.chassis. It doesn't seem to have the same cult following the E30 developed. Maybe that will change but a lot of the "cool" parts are going NLA on the E36 although still around if you dig.

Anyway, I can offer guidance as time permits.

Sounds good!

As of today, we are at 302 pages. I expect another half-dozen or so in the final product. I don't have any additional large lists for the appendix, so I don't expect any major growth now.

I am in process of refining and adding any relevant photos I have to clarify things. Also adding additional parts sourcing information to expand on what I have- stuff like where to get the right fuel rail depending on if you use the early or late fuel pressure regulator arrangement...

Anyway, I am still at it as time permits. Roughly an hour a day at this point, sometimes more.

Thanks to everyone for their patience! I promise it will be worth the wait!

Cool! That's a rare engine.

Find a regular 328 harness and dme to go with it. The Z3 wiring is different enough to make it unpleasant.

No time to work on the book the last few days. But I promise it will be worth the wait. All the interesting bits of information I've been collecting since 1998 is going in. I even found a copy of the bulletin BMW sent to the dealers to get them up to speed on the (then) new 1995 M3 Lightweight. I forgot I even had that!

Hey J!m, I'm new to the group and the 318ti. I've got a 97' ti with a blown M44 that I bought for a budget track car. I've been researching like crazy ever since I bought it to decide what kind of swap I want to do. I like the m52 aluminum block to keep weight down as much as possible so I want to do a 3L stroked m52tub28. From what I've read the m52b28 from the Z3 seems to be a fairly straightforward swap and I would like to generally keep it as simple as possible. Unfortunately the Z3 m52b28's are getting hard to find and pricey but the newer m52tub28's were used in several other cars and are easy and cheap to find. Plus it has dual vanos, which I would think is better and the revised intake manifold, which I'm not sure is better than the M50 or not?? I read your post that the m54b30 swap is more a pain in the ass than it's worth and I'm wondering if the m52tub28 is the same?? Will your swap manual include how to swap in the m52TU? Or should I give up on the TU and start beating the bushes for a Z3 m52b28?

Either way, I definitely want a copy so put me on the list.

The tu dual vanos engine came along in 99/2000, along with the switch to the E46 platform.

If you are going to go with a dual vanos engine, go "all in" and get an S54. It will be the same work and 333 hp... which is almost 100 more than you need, particularly in a gutted track car.

If I had time/money/space I'd do an S54 ti for the track. Or S50 B32 Euro engine conversion. But S54's are cheaper and easier to get.

Thanks J!m!! That's exactly what I needed to know. I'm doing the swap myself so I want to keep it as simple as possible. You're also right that 333hp is at least 100 more than I need. I agree with everything you said, and since I'm on a tight budget I will start beating the bushes for an M52.
I'm looking forward to your swap manual.

Ha! I'm looking forward to it too!

I keep making more work for myself however... as I check my data, I make corrections and additions which keep making it longer, but better. So, it's taking longer than expected but it will be better than ever too. Probably a bit more than originally projected ( due to longer length and adding more photos) but the pre-order price will still be excellent value.

It's a lot of fun but frustrating at the same time.

One of several side projects is to create a comprehensive list of all known (including group N) spring options. Only a few will fit the needs of a swapped ti but it is interesting and relevant for a regular E36 swap.

Not sure if I mentioned before but I also added the factory P code definitions to the appendix, so a cheap code reader (and that list) can accurately diagnose problems. I stopped using my Peake tool years ago because the included P code definitions was generic. Although many repeat across years and engines and dme versions, not all do. I also have the automatic transmission P codes for those using and auto in their swap.
