Right on man. I haven't seen an M42/M44 in so long, I have to really think about things before I can offer help, lol.

I've noticed on newer BMWs that the temp gauge doesn't have a center mark, maybe this is the reason why? They don't want people to freak out when the needle isn't perfectly centered?

Both my '95 and my new '97 run just ever so slightly to the right of center but I also think a little bit of that is because from the driver's seat, you're actually looking at the gauge from an angle to the left. When I crane my neck over and look at the gauge dead on, the needle is precisely in the middle.

The other morning on the way to work, I noticed the '97 seemed like it was taking a long time to get to operating temperature. I drove a good 4 miles before the gauge even got close to middle. Fearing I might have some thermostat issues (I went through this with the M42), on the way home I took it for spin on the freeway. Once I got to freeway speed, the needle dropped down all the way into the blue, signifying a stuck thermostat. Today on the way to work, it went right to the middle and stayed there. Today at lunchtime, I drove it for 8-10 miles, even some freeway, and nothing- needle was at 12 o'clock the entire time. Now I'm wondering if I have a sending unit going out, or the thermostat is intermittently sticking (or maybe both) ??? Anyone ever experience this?

I just changed my sensor and now it's in the middle looking at it straight on. From a driving point of view it looks a bit to the right but that's just the angle

Probably something amiss in cooling system. I have had that right before replacing radiatior in the past.

I'm not sure if this is directly related to the cooling system or not, but I'll give it a go anyway.

My temperature needle had never risen above half way (which is probably a good thing). Although it seems to stay on cold (after I've started the engine) for a long time. At times, the temperature needle rises to the centre (optimal), and then suddenly, a few minutes later the needle drops back down to the left (cool) again.

As I said, my car (according to the temperature gauge) has never over heated or risen above the centre, but I'm wondering if the needle is accurate?

Is this anything I should be worried about?
