Default problem with car key

has anyone had or heard of a problem where when you put your key into the ignition, the key will turn freely without catching. its happening right now to me. i can sometimes turn the key several times around and it doesnt feel like it is grabbing then other times i stick in the key and it works just fine. does this mean the key is broken or the ignition is damaged? it all happend kinda suddenly

That actually happens to me every so often, but it's only when the key is just a bit less than fully inserted. Have you done a CarFax? I've heard that a free-spinning ignition cylinder is a sign of a perviously stolen car...

I can't get a definitive answer on which part acutually goes bad the housing or the cylindar. I'm going to take a gamble and get the cylindar only. See I'm a cheapskate and I don't want to buy a key cylindar, AND a housing.

I ordered the cylindar from the bimmer guys, 94 bux. sux.

bump for answers...
