Default Question about Z3 and ti performance

My '95 ti is basically stock except a Supersprint cat-back. When I visit my friend in SoCal he lets me use his '96 Z3 1.9. I can't help but notice the difference in performance, the ti has much better throttle response. I thought this was due to the Z3 being heavier, just checked and they're both around 2700 lbs. Is the difference due to the M42 in the ti and the M44 in the Z3? Haven't ever driven an M44 ti, can anyone tell me the performance difference between the M42/M44 ti's? I am talking about basically stock cars w/ manual transmissions. I know the specs for both engines are pretty much the same, 138hp for both, the M44 has a bit more torque. What does your "seat of the pants" tell you?
