Default ABS Relay Location

Hi.

I continue to have trouble racking down a pesky ABS problem. It may not be my ABS controller (which has been replaced and problem persists).

I know it is not the best concept to throw parts at a problem but new relays were cheap, and now i can't find where the heck they go???

My fuse box in my 3/96 318ti does not look like the diagram in this thread nor does it have the relays shown. Is there some place else in the car that these relays might be hiding, or was realoem wrong again and I don't actually have these relays in my vehicle?? ugh.

thanks for the help!

(apologies for reposting this here, I accidently posted in the wrong forum yesterday - deleted/edited thread and included link to here)

Take a picture of your fuse box and post it here. By the way... are you in the US?

That is bizarre. I just checked my car, also early 1996. I have two relays marked ABS.

I think they say "ABS" right on them. I have a 3/96 as well! Will go check now.

EDIT: Yep, there are two of them, one red and one grey and they both have"ABS" printed on the top. They are right there in the fuse box.

Not here, my fuse box doesn't even have anything where it says one of those ABS relays should go. There's a hole! Now I do have a diagram on the cover of course, and one of the standard fuses on the left row says "ABS" but I see no place for "relays" to go or even being listed, making me wonder if there is another panel somewhere? I checked behind the glove-box where the ABS control unit is and nothing there.

Here's a pic:

That hole is where my ABS relay is.

Edit: And furthermore, both relays say ABS, not ASC.

My car doesn't have ASC.
Why do you have a relay that says ASC?
My build date: 5/96

Edit: Oh wait, I forgot about the conversion.
I have no idea which fuse panel I have.
The donor car had ASC since I have an extra computer harness.

According to the attached there is one ABS relay and another not used.
That probably explains why I have (2) relays.

Still not sure why you have a ASC relay since I don't believe it was available yet.

Ahh! Yeah, my car does not have ASC. The ASC relay and your open hole is where my relays are, just like Steven said.

I do have the little ASC button to the left of my steering wheel and the little green "gear" lights up in snow or rain sometimes.

Weird.
My build is later and I don't have ASC-T.

My car is a 95 and does not have ASC.
The fusebox looks like this:

A couple things strike me as odd about your fuse box... yes there does not appear to be an ABS relay in there, but you are also missing the O2 heater Relay in the top right and the DME relay 2 to the left of where the O2 relay should be.

Accoring to Beltly this is where everything goes:

Keep in mind there is another relay panel in the passenger compartment next to the steering column. You have to remove the lower dash panel to get to it. Take a look there.

Yes those are the parts I bought, I think the same ones shown in your fusebox and based on what realoem said for my vin - the two ABS relays 61.36-1 393 403 and 61.36-1 393 404. But there is something wacky with my fusebox and/or they don't appear to actually be present in my vehicle. It remains a mystery.
