It's a 320is for DTM in 92 for 93 bmw converted to s42's. | | | 11-28-2014, 03:39 PM | #17 | Member Join Date: Nov 2014 Location: rockford il Posts: 75 | Part of this build has to do with smashing some of the "car" guys in my area. Seriously they don't even understand or know what a stage (1,2,3,4,5 and so on) engine is. I even mention the word stage around them and they laugh. Another part of this is to show what my company is capable of sense its only a start up right now. Part of this build, at least the engine related stuff i want to use this overly hated bmw engine that people underestimate. A few have made s42 clones out of it and they are insane. I want to build a nice high output engine. I plan on getting forged pistons to up it around 14-16/1 (opinions on how high i should go would be great. I plan on running alcohol fuel when the build is complete) I need to bore and i would like to sleeve the engine (would have to send it somewhere for sure for that) probably just go .5 over make it an even 85mm (ps: an s42 is 2.2l not 2 at least thats what bmw says) i also have plans to run dual injectors per cylinder to help ease the trouble of having to move all that extra fuel when running alcohol. (Even thought about doing triples) as for trans i would just switch to a sequential and run carbon fiber drive shaft and axles (surprisingly cheaper then i though to do that) i know that the tubular frame and carbon fiber body are going to help things when it comes to road performance because of weight, (even looking into using cf on the frame for stronger parts) The name of this post says it all. I want OVERKIL lol. But i also want to keep the original engine (just m42 in general) i want to make it seem all nice and regular but in no way will it be. I have a bunch of CAD work to be finished but when it is I'll be able to show more parts, | | | 11-28-2014, 03:41 PM | #18 | Member Join Date: Nov 2014 Location: rockford il Posts: 75 | Note: I've talked to bmw directly about getting an s42 crate engine but it would have cost more the getting a brand new car | | | 11-28-2014, 05:21 PM | #19 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | There's a guy on bimmerforums who has a pretty detailed itb thread, he put some actual engineering into his design for the m42/44. Definitely worth a read. http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh....php?t=2124470 __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 11-28-2014, 06:06 PM | #20 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2013 Location: NJ Posts: 373 | Quote: Originally Posted by Aether tuning Part of this build has to do with smashing some of the "car" guys in my area. "Stage" levels are more marketing than anything. I don't believe there are standardized levels where xxx modifications count towards level 1, 2, 3 ... etc. What one company wants to call their stage 1 could be another company's stage 3. The numbers are irrelevant, what really matters is what the modifications are. Good luck with your company though. I'm looking forward to seeing what you build. __________________ 2000 M5 -> 1996 318ti -> 1997 328i Instagram: ndrewchow YouTube: MINIzguy | | | 11-29-2014, 02:13 PM | #21 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! If you run one fuel, the engine has to be optimized for that fuel, from the air intake runners to the tail pipe, and everything in between. But if you're doing it, why not impress us with a high-output turbo diesel conversion? Never mind the CAD renering, you need a metric ton of engineering to put together the engine you propose. I've got my popcorn handy but I don't see this engine concept working out so well for you. I think it was over 10 years ago now (pre-swap manual days) I was looking at the options for upgrading the original engine vs. replacing it. As many members know I went with the latter, and then wrote the book on it, for many reasons pertaining to cost and (more importanty) reliability. I can get the same (or more) power from the four with a DA supercharger (which was easy to get back then) Schrick cams and intake, bore and stroke; however the cost eclipsed an M3 swap and it would not be as reliable, or as easily repaired down the road (like now, when the DA supercharger is obsolete). Think long and hard about your plans. Just because you CAN do something, does not mean you SHOULD do something. My two cents.
