I need a cat, or one that would work to pass emissions. OBD1.

My entire old exhaust system is probably still in Konrad's scrap pile. I don't know if the cat would work well enough to pass emissions testing or not though. I'll ask the next time I call him, which should be Tuesday if I don't procrastinate again. ;-)

Let me know on that...i haven't had the cash to get a new one and have to get one by next month because that's when my tags run out and I need to get them registered to Davidson County anyways (been livin in Nashville since February, lol).

no idea on how much it may cost to ship it. kinda heavy and long. (thats what she said) I'm just going to guess it'll probably be around the $50 range unless someone knows a better idea. Could just cut out the cat and ship it that way. Would most likely be cheaper, but i'm leaning more towards you wanting it as a bolt up.

OK, just spoke to Konrad and my exhaust system is still in his scrap pile. You're welcome to give it a shot and see if it'll get you past emissions, BUT...
  1. It's an OBDII system, so you'd still need to plug the 2nd sensor hole.
  2. I replaced it because it was giving me the "efficiency threshold warning" or whatever the P0420 code means. So, it might still fail emissions testing.
  3. It's the entire system in ONE PIECE. Yes, the exhaust section and the cat. section are welded together. So, you could either bolt the entire thing on, or you'd need to do some cutting and welding.

If you want to try it, I'd suggest just swapping the entire system first. Then if it does get you through testing, you can cut/weld as necessary to put on the muffler you want.

Send me an e-mail or PM if you want it.

Marv - I have a custom exhaust and would only need the cat itself so I can weld it either in between my resonator and muffler or replace the resonator with the cat so I would figure on just shipping the cat itself.

Roadrash - as I stated before, i'll have to weld it in because of the custom exhaust so I would rather not pay to have one installed just to have to take it off and weld on another if it didn't work since I have to take it to a shop to get it installed anyways.

you are OBDI so you don't have the post-cat O2 sensor, you could just get a cheap universal one

I thought those didn't work for emissions though.

I think that's only in Cali where they have super-strict emissions

If you replace the ENTIRE system temporarily to find out if it gets you through testing, you'd only need to cut out and re-install my free cat. if it actually passed emissions. So, at worst, you'd have to drop your whole system, bolt mine on, get it tested and if it doesn't pass, take mine off and cut/weld in a new/used non-free one. I hope that's making sense. LOL

Either way, the choice is yours, just let me know if you want my old cat.

Does yours have the muffler, too?

Mine? Yes, it's the ENTIRE exhaust system from where it bolts to the headers all the way to the (chrome) exhaust tip. Yes, it's all one piece. You're welcome to try it and keep it if it works for ya. I have my doubts that it would pass emissions though, it depends on how they measure that sort of thing and whether it's different for OBD vs. OBDII.

Just let me know if you decide to give it a shot.

either way, let us know what you wanna do. Someone else already just asked about the cat, but you're first in line for it. again, LMK.

I see a couple of Nashville folks on this thread, and I just bought my first 318Ti today up in Gallatin. It's a 1996 California edition, with the aqua metallic paint, automatic (too bad).

The car came with three check engine codes, one of which was from the camshaft position sensor, the other two were knock sensors. Anyway, the car is great except for those codes and a rough idle, which seems to cause a rattle around where the catylitic converter is. I think that a consistent diet of 89 or 93 should fix the knock sensor codes, but do either of you have experience with a cam position sensor repair? Could this smooth out my idle?
