Default Noisy Strut Bearings

I'm getting crackling noises from my front struts, both sides. I had thought it was the bad ball joint, but new control arms didn't change anything. So, I'm assuming that I've got bad strut mount bearings.

I'm guessing that there's no way to Grease them, correct? Replacement requires removing & disassembling the strut, but not disconnecting anything else like the control arm, correct?

I'm looking for OEM like fit & performance, any brands to avoid? Bavauto has Sachs mounts for $30, Lemforder or Corteco at Pelican for $30.

Also, at Pelican the Lemforder and Corteco both have this note: "Proper installation requires removal of locating pin from the upper side of the mount" What does than mean?

Generally speaking, if a bearing is making grinding noises, then it's too late to fix the problem by greasing it.

When I was installing new shocks on my car, I remember there was a small stud that was screwed into the strut bearing. It looked like it was supposed to slot into a hole that wasn't present, so I just removed it. I'm assuming that the hole is present on some other variation of the E36.

That makes sense. Looks like new mounts are in my future. The decision now is do them in the cold or wait until spring.
