Question Old ZKW headlights into American 318Ti

Hello!

Apologies if this specific topic has already been discussed at length, just trying to cover my bases.

I bought a set of ZKW Euro glass headlights off eBay to install on my '98 318Ti. These were pulled off a European car, both light units have the automatic level adjustment motors on the rear center/bottom.

Both level adjustment motors have their 3-wire power cables cut, and I understand I can set the level adjustment manually once, at installation, using hex key, and disregard or remove the level motors themselves.

Is that right? Especially since American e36 do not have electronics installed to make use of these level adjustment motors.

Separately, I did pick up Euro plug and play power adapters for use with these headlights and American e36's, so believe it's just a matter of getting it done. I'll update with pictures momentarily.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You are correct. I used the Umnitza plug and play adapter to make the US/EU connection and adjusted the aim manually with the hex screws.

There are a few DYI articles out there. I followed the BavAuto PDF which is still available if you Google for E36 Euro headlight install.

Leave the motors in and adjust. The adapters make install extremely easy. I’d recommend going with and HID or more so LED headlight setup. LEDs are extremely efficient.
