Default HELP oil change

So I just bought the 318 figured it wouldn't hurt for an oil change.

I drained the oil and put the filter i got in the car, but it wouldn't fit. drove around about a hundred miles to every store i could find, each one had the correct filter for a 95 bmw 318ti and they were not fitting. I tried one for a m44 (1996 318ti) adn the computer showed it looking like the proper one...Problem is there are none in stock in my area. I already drained all the oil and need a filter. I just put the previous one back in. The jiffy lube sticker it had said it needed to be changed at 143900 and the car only had 140800, i believe they always just slap the sticker on for 3,000 miles so I just put the old filter back in.....Will this be ok for say 5,000 miles or so. I just wanted to freshen up the oil because the guy said the car had been sitting for a year...

Does my 95 have an M44? Or maybe just a m44 style oil housing....Why is this???!!

Will this filter be ok? Should I change it? Will it be ok to put a new filter in on this brand new oil even though I have re-used the old one already? I just spent $36 on 0w40

no your 95 isn't a m44, it's a m42. Are you sure you are using the one for the m42. I don't know if there is a difference. I always use the one from my local auto parts store and it always fit. I have never had any issue with mine. As for the filter i believe there will be no issue since it hasn't been used as much. But if i was you i would try to look for a new one.

I got the filter for a 1995 318ti from autozone, and from what i can see from my research, it fits the 1995s...with the metal canister. I have a plastic one.

We looked up the 1996 318ti filter at autozone, and the picture in their system looks identical to the one i had removed.

hmmm... interesting. I think i have heard of something like this before. Or unless you have a m44 in your 95 instead of a 96. Yea just go back and get the 96 filter. just take your old filter to the store and compare them there.

I seem to recall that some late model year M42 motors got the M44 oil housing.

You should get the new filter and install it as soon as you can, keeping in mind that you'll have to top off your oil.

O well you can install the filter without draining oil, because it's above the oil niveau.
