Does anyone have any information on fitting flywheels from the M50 or M52 engines? Which models fit -- E36, E46, 323i, 325i, 328i? Can I use a Valeo solid flywheel kit from a 323i or 328i? Which clutch? Any starter motor changes? | | | 05-17-2014, 02:38 PM | #2 | Member Join Date: Mar 2014 Location: Marietta, GA Posts: 30 | As far as I know, all flywheels and clutches fit all e36s, but you must use a flywheel and clutch that match so 325i flywheel with 325i clutch. The valeo kit they sell is I believe 228 mm for e36 and 240 mm for the e46 and e36 328i. It comes as a kit, clutch and flywheel. If you still have an m42/44 your clutch size is 218 mm. All e36 and e46 starters, except e46 m3 will work with all e36 and e46 flywheels. As an example I am running a sachs single mass conversion for the e36 325i in my e46 323i. | | | 05-17-2014, 11:34 PM | #3 | Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: NSW, Australia Posts: 63 | If the M50/52/54 flywheel/clutch is so easy why don't more people do it? Is it because the factory ones are all dual mass? | | | 05-17-2014, 11:43 PM | #4 | Member Join Date: Mar 2014 Location: Marietta, GA Posts: 30 | I thinks it's the reliability factor of duel mass flywheels. I personally would not buy a used duel mass flywheel without having seen how it works in the car, so anything being sold online would be out. There are things you can check but they could still go bad quickly, Secondly, the m50/52/54 flywheel-clutch assembly is just adding weight to the 4 banger where it doesn't need to be. Also, there is no positive to adding it to an m44 because the 218 mm clutch can handle about 200 hp if not treated poorly, and 228 can handle almost 300 hp if I remember correctly. The 240 mm can handle even more. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Thread Tools | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
