when changing the fuel filter, how do you get the cover off? there's two bolts, but there are also two rivet looking things holding it on, i don't get it... __________________

those are actually body nuts. believe they're even the same size as the other bolts. at least they are on my 96  __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles

just like regular nuts. believe they were like 8mm. ratchet and socket is what i used. i'm trying to find replacements for them now because the ones i have are rusty. if i successfully source them, i'll post the part number (realoem doesn't specifically show them in the diagram of the fuel filter cover). __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles

yeah, i couldn't even tell that they were nuts at all, so mangled, i'll get back under there and have a look. thanks though. I just need to get that filter out, i can feel the lag. __________________

pretty much everyone's fuel filter cover is rusted to crap.
i'd suggest some penetrating spray and hammer. if you round the bolts, the gripping bolt extractors work well. __________________

I picked up on Ebay last year a new plastic fuel filter cover. Sure beats a rusty metal one. I already replaced my fuel filter prior to buying the cover. Next fuel filter change, I will put the plastic cover on. Part # 8193999 That's what's written on the cover.
