Default inexpensive new key cut?

My understanding is that the keys have a chip which must be present to be identified to allow the car to start. Was in a dealership yesterday and the parts guy mentioned that the black plastic emergency key also has that chip. Hmm. My only metal key is really badly worn and I'd like another to use so i have a backup. Dealer will cut and code one new key for $103.

What if I attached my original key inside the steering column housing trim to provide the chip signal and bought some unchipped key blanks on Ebay at $10 or so for two blanks and had the keys cut? Is that workable? If not, are we stuck with hundred dollar replacement keys or is there an "ahem" inexpensive option?

This is exactly how the remote starter in my car was wired. There's a key taped inside a trim spliced into the ignition wires, hidden somewhere. The car shuts off if the pedal is pressed and the ignition is not on the ON position, but I've never tested with an unchipped key, though.
