Default DME Interchangability

Searching didn't bring up anything. So my question is can a DME from a manual car be put in an automatic trans car and visa versa?

My daughter's car is throwing a bad MAF code. After some checks, the MAF is not getting any ground. If grounded, car runs beautifully, idles a bit high but I think its because its not receiving the pulse from the DME. The wiring rings out fine, so there are no breaks in the harness.

So, I have 2 spare DMEs lying around but they are both from a 5 speed. Do you think any harm will come from using the 5 speed DME on an automatic car?

DME 1 is a 10/95 from my clubsport
DME 2 is a 05/95

Kasandra's DME is a 07/95

The TCU controls the trans, with data from the DME.

Installing them shouldn't let the engine run due to ews2. You'll need a purple label m42 dme with ews0. Otherwise, yes you can install a dme from any matching chassis to the next whether it's auto or manual

You were right Tony. The car would not start with the dme's.

Never heard of a purple label or ews0....

I thought they would work being all m42 dme's. Part numbers all match with the last three being 282.

Anyone have a purple label for sale?

60 SHIPPED. I HAVE ONE. The purple label EWS0 for the m42 is just like a red label m50 dme, you can install it on any e36.

282 is the mid to late MY95 DME that was used for the cars that were starting to get some of the 96 type upgrades. There are some EWS issues with this DME, but it isn't the same as the 96 DME's where the EWS codes in the tune must match the EWS control unit.

it is also the DME that seems to give people the most trouble trying to get it tuned properly.

I'm able to move stock chips in and out of my 282 DME along with properly done aftermarket chips without worrying about EWS issues. I can also swap two different 282 DMEs in my car, and have no startup issues.

Still haven't had any one confirm if the dinan and turner chips for the 282 remove EWS, but they are not advertised as doing such and those can also be installed without worrying about EWS issues. Pretty sure the key has the match the EWS unit in these cars, and the DME doesn't really matter as long as it is a 282. No experience with swapping back to an earlier DME.

How I understand it: The 282 can have a EWS delete chip put in it or you can do the 1 wire cut and put any DME in a EWS-I car. 1996+ is the year you will need a EWS simulator or it won't start unless everything matches and is alligned. I know EWS-II very well so I think you can run any of your DME's with a chip or 1-wire cut to disable EWS. Only my thoughts

Yes is it the same and they both must match the EWS module

The only way to start a EWS equipt DME is to get a EWS delete chip, Original software version or EWS emulation device

With my delete chip there is no wire cutting at all for OBD1, It's a direct chip swap in.

Barrie, the odd thing is that I had three stock chips and they all started my car, I also have two different 282 DMEs and they both can be plugged in and start my car with any of the stock chips.

Dinan and turner chips can just be swapped in, but for a custom tune, I had to copy one of the stock chips using a burn2 before it would start properly. When I was using a willem, i don't think I ever got a good read from any chips. Probably just something wrong with that particular chip reader. Burn2 is so much nicer/easy to use.

Four tis and about 7 different dmes and engines, whether it's m42 or m44 they contain ews2 in a 318ti including early clubsport models. In order to use a stock dme as a replacement on an m42, it'd need to be flashed becaue of ews2 or an earlier e36 non-ti m42 dme must be used and the ews signal cut. That leaves you with 92, 93, and 94, not always the easiest to come by in the sale market but moreso at a junkyard of some sort. I've tried interchanging dmes numerous times and it works like a charm just like using red label dmes for swaps and ability to change the dme on the fly if needed. Otherwise, silver label to silver label never worked whether it was m42 or m44

I'm staying out of this but I know what will work. Tit for Tat we have multiple ways to disable the EWS on most cars. Even EWS-II can use a different DME if needed, it is easy.
