Default Extra Tail Light Mod

I saw a post on bimmerforums that showed someone connecting the unused sockets in the rear tail lights and decided I would get a little more detailed with it...

Items Needed
Drill w/a 3/32" and a regular phillips head bit
4 small sheet metal screws
4 3/16"...

I told my dad about this mod and he thinks they may be some legal issues with it? I'm tempted to do it anyway and if I get pulled over then we'll know for sure. Can anybody shed some light on the legalities of this extra brake light?

Any legal issues would probably be state/local laws. So you'll get more accurate info if you do the research for yourself rather than relying on info that's applicable to another state. Perhaps your state has some info online? I think I've seen some of TN's motor vehicle code online, so I'll try to check that.

I know in TN there is the "dazzling lights" law which says that if we have underglows they can only be a solid color and no strobes but nothing about adding brake lights. Alot of people with trucks around here have those LED strips that go below the tailgate and I have never heard of any issues there.

Technically I bet it is illegal since anything not from the factory is illegal.
I highly doubt that anyone would stop you for have two extra bulbs.
Hell, my car passed inspection with the double lights since how many people do you think know that there should only be one brake light on each side on a ti?

I just wanted to say some things in retrospect after doing this. I recommend to not solder!!!! It is a pain to solder this, it took way too much time and way too much solder! I dont give up easily so I keep trying and it eventually stuck. Also the second I pressed the break I heard a POP. Changed the fuse..... Next try...POP. Went to the next fuse size and has worked fine ever since. In the writeup he mentioned not needing to upgrade the fuse size, I'm guessing it has something to do with me using random bulbs(but the same for both sides) that I already had laying around. Anyways I have not had a problem with it for 5 days now and I am loving it..

I did this mod and soldered it no problem... just sand the metal before doing it.
And I definitely did not have to upgrade the fuse. I think you have a problem.

LOL mine have the bulbs in them too... I think I'm going to go one step further and remove the brake light from the outermost position. I'm going to make it like all the other e36's that use just the inner position for the brakes...

I also perform the mod today and it's really nice! But i have one question. Right now when i press the brake on my dashboard appear some light with symbols like that ~// . Any ideas why that is happening? It look like the light for low beams.

I just see that for for example when i turn on my low beam lights and/or fog lights the lights that are supposed to be on on the dashboard are off. But when i press the brake they appear. If there is no light at all, when i press the brake only the low beam light is on. I think something is mess up with the circuit of the lights. I guess if there is no way to fix that i'll remove the extra light .

P.S.: I'm pretty sure you know what i mean, that's why i didn't take pictures.

Curious if the mystery bulbs are for rear fogs (Euro)?
New e90's have the same extra bulbs and people are buying Euro light control switches that have the rear fog switch installed.
...time to check out the Euro parts lists....

For our cars it's simply not a matter of buying the euro switch.... You'd have to add a pin to the bulb carrier and run wires to the switch, then from the switch to the cluster connector, I believe. I did the same thing on my 540i. That car has a Light Control Module (LCM) and wires had to be run from the tails to the LCM, then from the LCM to the switch.
