Coil overs are usually over kill on a street car. Sure, theyre ride height adjustable, but should be aligned every time you change the height of the vehicle. There are also spring rates and damper settings in most coil over kits that are adjustable; the more adjustable, the more expensive they are. Price may also deter you from coil overs, as they are usually about twice as much for basics compared to a damper/spring combo. Springs are a set spring weight and usually have a matching damper to go with them for the best ride quality. One time install, one time alignment once lowered, no adjustments unless you go with a high end damper like Koni. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 10-10-2009, 10:09 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | I agree. ^^^ Unless you need to corner balance your car or tweak the ride height, coilovers are a waste of money. A good set of springs and struts is all you need. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 10-11-2009, 12:40 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | I'd go with just springs too just out of curiosity, are those rims 15" or 16"? because you're going to need a higher profile tire, with those tires you're speedometer is going to be off by quite a bit and your odometer is going to go up much faster than it should, plus it looks kinda funny with the small wheels | | | 10-11-2009, 03:39 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Quote: Originally Posted by tiFreak I'd go with just springs too just out of curiosity, are those rims 15" or 16"? because you're going to need a higher profile tire, with those tires you're speedometer is going to be off by quite a bit and your odometer is going to go up much faster than it should, plus it looks kinda funny with the small wheels | x2, you need to get the right sized tires before you lower the car. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 10-11-2009, 12:15 PM | #8 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: plymouth Posts: 21 | hey thanks for all the replies , i have only just had those tyres put on lol so there brand new , and cant afford changing them now . i would go for springs but i dont know how low i can go thats why im heading more towards coilovers . so i can adjust the hight suitable . Would anyone have a guess how low i could possibly go with them tyres on ? cheers ..... And yeh the wheels are 15" with 195/45/15 tyres on how much do you think it will affect the speedo , would i be going faster or slower than what it reads ? thanks for the help . | | | 10-11-2009, 04:11 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Gilbert Posts: 621 | im assuming it will say you going faster then you are since your odometer will be climbing faster than it should. and id say about an inch drop but it wont look as good as it would if you had a little bigger rim. now you have the big gaps in your wheel wells. __________________ *IF ITS FAST AND CHEAP, ITS NOT RELIABLE* *IF ITS CHEAP AND RELIABLE, ITS NOT FAST* *IF ITS FAST AND RELIABLE, ITS NOT CHEAP* | | | 10-11-2009, 04:15 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Honestly, youll need at least 80mm worth of a drop to even get the chassis near the rims, which is pretty much coil over territory. If it were me, id take the tires and/or rims back, get the PROPER size (you should have 205/60/15s) or close to it. The tires you have on there right now are just too low profile and for no reason at all. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 10-11-2009, 09:53 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Like blue said, take the tires back or sell them in the classifieds. There is no reason to run tires like that. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 10-11-2009, 10:04 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Gilbert Posts: 621 | whoa! they make things like that? haha time to do some number crunching. __________________ *IF ITS FAST AND CHEAP, ITS NOT RELIABLE* *IF ITS CHEAP AND RELIABLE, ITS NOT FAST* *IF ITS FAST AND RELIABLE, ITS NOT CHEAP* | | | 10-13-2009, 12:42 AM | #13 | Member Join Date: Jun 2008 Location: Cocoa, FL Posts: 73 | Quote: Originally Posted by euro316 hey thanks for all the replies , i have only just had those tyres put on lol so there brand new , and cant afford changing them now . i would go for springs but i dont know how low i can go thats why im heading more towards coilovers . so i can adjust the hight suitable . I'd hate to drive on them every day. __________________ | | | 11-20-2009, 09:14 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2008 Location: Florida Posts: 229 | My ti had the original 15 inch rims with 205/65/15 tire. That's the right size. As of speedometer.. I have 205/50/16 tires right now and still reads a little high. TiFreak said the ti is limited on 116mph and mine read 120-122 once.. | | | 11-27-2009, 02:52 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2009 Location: Portugal Posts: 216 | No. the ti original size its 205/60/15 and i once test the speedometer with the gps it make plus 10km/h in the speedometer!! __________________ 7Best mods: Angel Eyes, Rear Camber Toe Kit, Eibach Sportline Springs(Red), Magnecor Red Spark Wires, Platinum Spark Plugs, Aileron With Stop Light, New Front Grills Chrome.
