318ti Sport E46 Engine tick noise at idle

I have a 2004 E46 318ti Sport, theres a loud ticking noise from the engine when idling, sounds very loud any ideas?

Check your oil.

it is normal for e46's to tick for a while on start up. but check your oil obviously.

Thanks guys, Its not when its cold or just when starting, the oil is fine, correct grade etc, the ticking is when the car is idling at normal temp, been told that this could be the valvetronic system but I think it sounds to loud and constant to be that. Anyone know anything about this fuel system, is it noisy with loud ticking, sounds like a diesel but only when the car is idling.
