Since upgrading the front brakes, the original spare will not clear the callipers. A larger spare will not fit the holder beneath the car. Additionally, fitted with 17" sytle 23s, the original spare tire is about > 1 inch shorter in height. So, assuming the orginal would clear the stock rear caliper in the event of a rear flat, the car would have an uneven stance. I've also considered swapping front to rear in the case of a front flat using the spare on the rear and bringing forth a rear tire to mount in front. Any thoughts? | | | 03-10-2010, 05:42 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | What brakes did you install? I wouldn't worry about the stance since you don't have many alternatives. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 03-10-2010, 08:23 PM | #3 | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: SW Michigan Posts: 90 | Quote: Originally Posted by 1996 328ti What brakes did you install? Perhaps I should have left well enough alone.... | | | 03-10-2010, 08:47 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: Burlington, NJ Posts: 560 | Well should you ever get a front flat, move a rear tire to the front and put the spare on the back ? __________________ 1996 318ti - 2000 Z3 2.3 - 2012 MINI Cooper Hatchback | | | 03-10-2010, 09:15 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: SW Michigan Posts: 90 | Quote: Originally Posted by amancuso Well should you ever get a front flat, move a rear tire to the front and put the spare on the back ? | Please re-read original post. | | | 03-10-2010, 09:40 PM | #6 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Quote: Originally Posted by rikdee Please re-read original post. | So what exactly is your question then? Yes you'd have to put the spare on the rear and move a rear to the front(should one of your front tires go flat). If you're worried about an uneven stance, you should note that most space-saver spare tires are not a perfect match in size to the regular tires hence the term space-saver. The other solution is to carry a full size spare in your cargo area. I removed my space-saver spare because it scraped on driveways and was dry and cracking. Wasn't safe to use anyway, they usually aren't. Those spare tires aren't really made to be driven on for long distances or highway speeds. They're just meant to get you down the road to the service station. As I mentioned earlier, I carry a full size spare in my cargo area. It's came in very handy for other uses besides a spare tire. I've used it to stand on as well as an improvised jack stand when I have to work under the car away from my garage. | | | 03-10-2010, 10:18 PM | #7 | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: SW Michigan Posts: 90 | Quote: Originally Posted by cooljess76 So what exactly is your question then? | Merely seeking any idea(s) I might have overlooked.
