Default Check engine light

Ok, so I've had my car for less than a year, 98' 318ti automatic, I didn't get an owner's manual with the car though, so I can't check the book to see what I need to change. The check engine light just went on and my dad changed the oil, and those other fluids, but the light isn't going off. It's at about 113,xxx miles and I was wondering if it's something else. Anything need to be changed?
Thanks.

you need a fault code reader if you hope to really know why the CEL came on and also to clear it out once you've fixed the issue. Peake is a popular brand but someone else will be able to tell you more.

The CEL is an OBDII (emissions) fault light. You will need to read the codes to fix the problem.

Sometimes it is as simple as a gas cap seal, but can get as complicated/expensive as a bad cat.
