Default The infamous Check Engine light

So my check engine light came on while driving to work today. The car is running just fine for now so I'm hoping its only my O2 sensors. At the end of October my check engine light came on a few days before my inspection appointment and I thought I was gonna be screwed. I was lucky and the light went out a day before I got it inspected. I knew the light was eventually going to come back on. I hope I can find out whats up with it this weekend so I can get it fixed.

What bothers me the most about this situation is that I just spent a lot of money on ($1100.00 total) rear wheel bearings, halfshafts, three tensioner pullies and Bavarian Autosport 8mm ignition wires, and brake pads and rotors all around. The original BMW ignition wires went bad on my car and the check engine light came on because the car wasn't getting any spark in the one cylinder so it was running on three cylinders. That sucked.

So does that mean it's fixed now?

I live in Mertztown PA. thats between Kutztown and Allentown. My friend goes to State College. Do you go to school there.

Naw, I'm actually a townie. Didn't go to Penn State, but something like 72% of my graduating class did. Kind of precisely why I went elsewhere.

I was born in Allentown, so I know generally where you are.

do you have a code reader at all or know anyone who does? possible to stop by an autozone for a free reading?

Thats what I need to do. Im thinking about going to my Dads friends garage to hook up to his fault reader. The guys just talks a lot and I get stuck there way too long.

better a little lost time and accurate code readings so you know what you're looking at. O2 sensors aren't cheap, hate to replace them for nothing.

Isn't the check engine light just for emissions? What else besides the O2 sensors, camshaft speed sensor and ignition wires would set off the check engine light?

tons of things...throttle position sensor, knock sensor, electrical fuel pump relay, fuel injectors, intake air resonance valce, idle control valve, evaporative purge cpontrol valve, air flow sensor, ignition coils, ignition timing intervention, cehicle speed signla not present, etc etc

what all that means? not sure i just read down the code list that came with my scanner tool!

lol ... go rob! yeah, it's more than just emissions, it's also proper operation. just On Board Diagnostics (OBD) that run and look for faults. of course, one could argue that they're related. if it's not running properly, it may very well produce more emissions.
