I was thinking about building an M42...but finding the parts is quite hard. So I'm thinking about buying one...what do you guys think with a stock bottom end and a head from those guys would do? Think the bottom end would handle it? Isn't the crank and rods already forged? Oh btw i have a 94 318iS not sure if the M42's differed from hatches to coupes.

built head for 2 G's add boost what do you get? something slow turned into something pretty damn quick for what it is for around 5000 (that is if i go with a DASC). I'd say that's not really that bad. Plus with a built head you can up the boost a little more than 6 pounds. The bottom end should be able to handle a little more than 6 pounds from what i've read on bf.c. Then **** swap the crank, rods, and pistons...even more boost. For me I just don't see running 6 pounds on a bone stock motor being safe. The head is usually the first thing to go. A while back one of my friends found a site where these guys tested how far they could push the stock internals of a M42B18. 12 pounds the head gasket blew they upgraded the head gasket and went to 18 pounds. Then the head popped, put a built head on it and the then finally blew a hole in the side of the block at 36 pounds. Now i'm not saying all M42's will handle the same amount of boost as them. I just figured i'd be safe to get a built head to start off.

How much horsepower would you gain with a new head from metricmechanics?
