Which one is the best, distance wise? 29%, 30% or 50%? Does it make the car harder to drive? What would you guys suggest? Thanks, Nick | | | 07-31-2006, 01:43 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | I put in the MZ3 lever. Got the parts from the dealer, all total about $60.00 I think. Mine has a huge throw reduction, the largest possible with an OEM shifter swap. Do a site search and I think you will come accross my install comments. Quote: Originally Posted by minihoover Does anyone have or know what understeer.com Budget SSK works with a ti? WSR from BW.com and going to go with some Delrin Carrier bushings from Understeer.com. | | | 07-31-2006, 04:19 AM | #4 | Member Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: Orlando/ UCF Posts: 52 | Anybody know which one of the 3 on understeer.com is the MZ3 one? For the money it is the best upgrade I have done to my car! | | | 08-02-2006, 02:12 AM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: El Paso, TX Posts: 20 | I have the M3/328 lever, the one in the middle, but mine has a metal ball instead of the plastic one. It shortened the shift throw considerably. I did have to bend the selector lever to clear the meat ring on the drive shaft on my '97 ti. What did the guys using the MZ3 lever do to clear the ring? Bend the selector more? Get an ERK? I also have an MZ3 lever in case I want an even shorter shift. Don S. | | | 08-02-2006, 02:32 AM | #8 | Member Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Vancouver, B.C. Canada Posts: 92 | I have a 95ti and to put in the m z3 shifter there was no modification necesarry. This is due to the fact that my car did not have a vibration dampner on the driveshaft. I have come to the conlusion that any ti made after 95 had the dampner, and any ti made in or before 95 does not have a vibration dampner. I make this statement because the only other person I have found who did not have to do any mods also had a 95. | | | 08-02-2006, 01:29 PM | #9 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: El Paso, TX Posts: 20 | Looking at part numbers I think that the same drive shaft is used from 95 to 97. So can I remove the vibration dampener from my '97? I am planning to replace the guibo in the coming months anyway - currently at 125k miles on the original clutch and guibo. But you will need to bend your selector rod if you leave it in. Quote: Originally Posted by donslade Looking at part numbers I think that the same drive shaft is used from 95 to 97. Thanks, Nick | If the budget SSK uses the hollow shifter arm, fill it with lead. I filled mine with lead and it makes a HUGE difference, the shifts are more solid. Call it the poor man's WSR. __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 08-03-2006, 06:24 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: LA & Colo Spgs Posts: 210 | Even a standard Z3 shifter is better than the stock ti shifter...not quite as big a reduction in shifter travel as the MZ3 unit, but still significant (and a couple bucks cheaper). | | | 08-03-2006, 08:00 AM | #13 | Member Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: Orlando/ UCF Posts: 52 | Quote: Originally Posted by DustenT If the budget SSK uses the hollow shifter arm, fill it with lead. Im thinking of doing that, any tips? And as for the slector rod, any suggestions on how much or how best to bend it to the set length? Thanks guys. | | | 08-03-2006, 01:19 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | I wish I had taken measurements when I did it. Basically you just install it, see where it hits the driveshaft ring, and bend it to clear. Then see where the shift knob rests, and bend the selector rod accordingly to center the knob. One thing I'm sure of, bend the selector rod at the rear most of the rod as possible. That will give it the most clearance when you are putting it in 1st, 3rd and 5th gear. Make sure you try all the gears and see if it clears. If you have a vise, a mini torch and a bucket of water, you are good to go. Trial and error till you get it correct. They do it with just a vice and what looks like some sockets on each side. I was planning to do that.
