I'm considering a different style rear view mirror. One with maybe the clown nose alarm LED or maybe auto dimming. What are the constraints that determine what mirrors work with our cars? I realize the LED alarm version or auto dimming require power or some sort of wiring. There are many on Ebay, I just don't know which ones can work with our cars.

The e39 alarm/auto dimming rear view doesn't attach to the windshield so I think that will be the problem. If you make up a mount yourself you could use it. But I'm fairly certain it will not attach to the stock Ti windshield mount. So yeah, it is possible, but it is not a simple "bolt-on."
edit- So I took a look at it, and it does attach to the winshield at the bottom, but the attachment point is different that the Ti and it comes up into the headliner to conceal the wiring..
I'm already mounting my satellite radio up on the rear view mirror, and powering it through the sunroof motor. So adding power to the mirror through the sunroof motor is fine with me. How is the fitment gonna work?
Here are pics of an E39 mirror.

When I get home I can take a picture of the mounts on both an e39 and the Ti.. Although I'm not sure if you will really be able to see how they mount as it is blacked out from the outside of the window. I'll see what I can get for you though..

Note: the picture was not taken inside a BMW.. I had this Z4 mirror on my Hyundai Tiburon and then transferred it to my Ti. This is an electroc Chromatic mirror, meaning it self darkens when lights hit it from behind when it is dark out.
As for how it mounts.. I simply stuck it to the pad on the windsheild (after regluing it) and wired it to the lights so that it gets power when the lights are on.
I have also since removed the "clown nose" dome on the bottom and filled the hole before repainting it. Damn thing annoyed me to no end.
The first pic is from the outside looking at the rear view mirror. That rearview has the rain sensor, auto dimming, and the alarm light. Notice why at first I thought it mounted differently, it looks much bigger. But I think the extra area around the mount is just a case to hold the electronics for the rain sensor.
The last picture is of the Ti rearview mirror pulled off so you can see what the attachment looks like. The part that is glued to the windshield has a triangle rotated 45 degrees. You put the rearview on at an angle just twist it and it locks into place.
It actually looks like it would be really easy if you already have power in that general area.
Like I said, I tapped power from the sunroof motor to power my Sirius satellite receiver. Not sure if constant power is required or recommended to operate the dimmer/alarm. As long as it mounts, and I can tap power, I'm interested. Is that the same model mirror as the one I posted pictures of?

hmm.. I'm still getting quota exceeding after buying site supporter.. Thought attachments were unlimited...

No. It looks nothing like it. There is no "credit card" slot. I have no clue what that is for. My mirror is somewhat flat and the electronics are more than likely in the large box that sits around the mount.
I have to wonder where the wiring is for it. Unless he isn't showing everything in the pictures. Not really sure.
I meant the mirror that I posted two pics of, not the one on the link. Seems there are many variations of even E39 mirrors.

You can also tap power for the Sirius/mirror using the violet/white wire going to the map lights (hot during accy, run, start according to Mr. Stygar himself).

I currently tap power for my sirius from the sunroof motor; that has constant power. I think I may need constant power anyway, so I can use my remote to turn on the satellite receiver. But for the mirror, I do not want constant power. The alarm clown nose will get a tap off the alarm wire already going to the LED on the center console.
I also need to design a bracket that mounts on the mirror base to mount the sirius receiver. Since I will have the mirror in hand, I will do that prior to installing
