Default newbie here

hi... i'm new.

i'm awaiting a title transfer on a silver 1998 318ti sport with the m-package. upgrades already installed are a dinan intake, ecu, and exhaust. the body is in perfect shape aside from a couple dings... no rust. it's got 119,000 miles on it.

how much did i pay you ask? heh, this is where you get jealous.... my friend traded me for a laptop! he just got a brand new subaru sti and wanted his ti to go to someone who would take good care of it (it was his first car).

the car needs tires, could use a new muffler, and i have that phantom brake light problem i've been reading about. the brake light on the hatch works fine, but the other two don't work. the fuse and bulbs are fine.... sounds like hours of fun.

this will be my first manual car. i just learned how to drive stick on a wrx. i've heard the ti's clutch is about ten times easier to master.

any advice to help diagnose the brake light problem would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum....the brake problem sounds like it could possibly be the brake sensor switch, but dont quote me on that. The previous owner of my TI had that problem and ended up replacing it and fixin the problem.

My brake lights didnt work when I Got my car. but I just replaced the bulbs! lol. That fixed it all. You'll learn to love the little TI. I was looking to sell mine to move up to either an E36 328 or M3. I gave up on that, and couldnt cut loose with my car. They definitely grow on you.

i have nothing against the car. i actually haven't driven it yet because the title isn't in my name and i'm not insured. i won't drive it untill the brake lights are fixed. the exhaust is gonna draw enough attention and i don't need a cop noticing my defective brake lights, ya know?

photobucket.com or somehow on this page.

The B/S connects to the inner brakepads on one of the calipers, take te tire off and look for it, check to see if the pads are low, it needs to be very low to get the light to come on.

rear brake sensor is connected to the rear passenger brake assembly.
when you pull the pad out... there should be a wire connected to it.

front, i believe, is on the front driver side strut assembly.
There's a small flap door on the under fender panel that you flip open to find it.
once again, when you pull out the pad, the wire should be connected to it.

i "think" im correct about this. but down quote me 100percent haha

thanks for the replies folks. i got a pic for my avatar.

so you think the brake lights might stop working because the pads are low?? haha... that's pretty funny. i guess they figure there's no point in making the brake lights come on cuz there's a good chance i ain't stopping anyway. hahaha!
