Wawa vs Shell gas

I've been always using Shell premium gas and my car's gas mpg has been in the average 26mpg, according to the LCD odometer. I do a lot of city driving every day, and also do a fair amount of highway driving on occasion. For the first time, I had to use Wawa (premium) gas because I was out of town and driving home at midnight and all of the local gas stations were closed, except Wawa. So the next day (today) I went back out and ran some errands and checked it again, and it was in the near 32-33, according to the LCD. I thought this was weird because I've heard a lot that Wawa gas is pretty crappy, and Shell has good gas and all of the delicious additives to it. This ins't exactly conclusive yet, and I'll keep checking it throughout the week. Anyone have any thoughts?

I was introduced to Snapple from a Wawa in Philly in 1989 on our way to a two year assignment in Ankara, Turkey. Funny the things you remember.

Maybe the shell station you usually use puts more than 10% ethanol in the fuel.

Out here, we only have dignified names for petrol re-fueling facilities...

I'm pretty sure Wawa is only local to the east coast / mid-atlantic

I consistantly get better mileage with Shell or (76) than other brands used when not available... here in N. Calif San Fran area.

it could be any number of things really. could be different roads you traveled on, or maybe the summer mix of gasoline (they mix different things in it for the winter). maybe even the temperature helped or hurt it. if you have a manual, 28 - 30 is common (atleast for me when i do a mix of highway and city) if i do all city, i only get about 18 - 24mpg. all highway is 34 - 38mpg.

could be any number of things, but go back a few times to that wawa and see if it is a fluke. try other stations too, maybe that shell station has been cutting some corners or something

And yeah, Wawa is popular on the east cost (maybe even north east?) It started in Pennsylvania (the first store is actually close to where i live). just for the rest of you who have no idea what a Wawa is. hahaha

The thing about gasoline is that the gas you are getting at a certain gas station may not actually come from that brand. For example, ARCO gas in northern california actually comes from Shell because ARCO doesn't have a refinery around there, but Shel does. ARCO buys it, adds it's own additives and then sells it at it's own stations.

I've found that premium winter gas with no ethanol gives me the best highway mileage at the standard speed limit: 37 mpg, cold intake air helping no doubt. The worst highway mileage I find is with 87 octane summer gas with 10% ethanol: 30 mpg in warm weather, and this gas seems to make the green indicators like run down a lot faster than higher octane, all else being roughly equal.
