When the tranny is cold it will grind going into 2nd gear the first few times. Once its warm, no problems just a little notchy. When its warm if i 7k rpm shift it into second sometime it just grinds like hell and doesn't even make it into gear. I have an extra tranny laying around but don't know when I'll have time to throw it in. __________________ -Jeff | | | 06-16-2009, 06:47 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Central NJ Posts: 2,440 | That happens to me too... and happened on my last Ti. I just am careful now with 2nd gear. My tranny never failed on either car so who knows. Just try to take it easy I guess. I try to avoid shifts into 2nd at over 5000 RPM. | | | 06-16-2009, 06:51 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Raleigh/Charlotte, NC Posts: 1,233 | ....life begins after 4k rpm on a non-vanos motor haha __________________ -Jeff | | | 06-16-2009, 06:57 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: NJ Posts: 1,625 | I think your 2nd gear synchros are going... next time you change your tranny fluid, look for gold flakes / dusting. If you see them, you will need new synchros eventually. My tranny fluid looked like Goldschlager (except much finer), the first time I changed it... __________________ SOLD!SOLD!SOLD!SOLD!SOLD!SOLD!SOLD!SOLD! On vanos motors, the vanos unit advances the timing to get a little more power at higher rpms. Are you saying that it would be beneficial to delete the vanos unit on vanos equipped motors? I've seen it done on turbocharged motors but figured that was compensated by software | | | 06-16-2009, 07:08 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Raleigh/Charlotte, NC Posts: 1,233 | The non-vanos cams are just as hot as m3 cams, the motors don't make much power down low but pull hard to 7k and keep wanting to pull more. the tranny has a leak too, kinda sucks, i just put it in for my auto to manual swap, looks like the extra one i have is going in, hopefully this one holds up, i have no clue as to the history of it. __________________ -Jeff | | | 06-16-2009, 07:21 PM | #7 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Quote: Originally Posted by Xenocide The non-vanos cams are just as hot as m3 cams, the motors don't make much power down low but pull hard to 7k and keep wanting to pull more. the tranny has a leak too, kinda sucks, i just put it in for my auto to manual swap, looks like the extra one i have is going in, hopefully this one holds up, i have no clue as to the history of it. | OK I gotcha. Bummer about the leak, have you identified where it's coming from? Might be easier to replace a seal if you suspect the grinding to be due to low fluid level. Then again, since you already have an extra tranny laying around. Might also want to try another slave cylinder first though, they're pretty cheap | | | 06-16-2009, 07:26 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Central NJ Posts: 2,440 | Man, that tranny swap is not fun! I hope you got that issue with my driveshaft fixed. Jess-- do the M50 manifold if you haven't already. The M Roadster is SO FUN with it!!! | | | 06-16-2009, 07:28 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Raleigh/Charlotte, NC Posts: 1,233 | The tranny has a nice crack ontop by one of the internal selector trees or what ever they are called. Slave is brand new. Clutch job only takes about 4 hours if you have two people, tranny swap should be about 3 and a half if you bust ass. __________________ -Jeff | | | 06-17-2009, 06:15 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Central NJ Posts: 2,440 | Just epoxy it! We repaired the EGR valve on a 96 SOHC Neon with high temp epoxy Better than a few hundred dollar part. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
