Looking to purchase a Ti to campaign in G-Stock autox. I know that starting in 97 the Ti's came equipped with ASC but Im not sure why this is bad for autox. Is it a weight issue? Obviously, any kind of traction control is unwanted but cant it simply be turned off? 97+ cars were still available with LSD's right? Id like to buy the newest Ti I can... | | | 08-18-2006, 12:41 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Halethorpe, MD Posts: 1,028 | The ti never came with DSC(Dynamic Stability Control). After late '95 early '96 the limited slip was no longer an option and the car was equipped with ASC+T(Automatic Stability Control + Traction, I think). This system is much less complicated and intrusive than I've heard DSC is. It uses the ABS sensors to monitor the rear wheels for slippage. It then uses the ABS system to brake the wheel that is slipping. If that's not working it uses a secondary throttle body in the intake to cut power. The only extra weight is that little throttle body and a handful of electronics. The good thing about ASC+T is that it can be turned off completely with a button on the dash. Other than not having an LSD, there is no drawback to having a car with this system. As for the newest you can get, that would be a '99. They quit making them after that. | | | 08-18-2006, 12:49 PM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Posts: 12 | *edited the original post* Oh ok, I couldve swore I read that in a post on this forum (DSC not ASC). Thanks for the explanation of the system. It think to me it may be worth it to buy a newer Ti and swap to a LSD, even though Im not looking forward to it. | | | 08-18-2006, 01:11 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Swapping your diff to a LSD will put you in another class, or I you already no longer in a stock class? __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 08-19-2006, 12:33 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: San Jose, CA, USA Posts: 253 | Well, you can add an LSD, as long as it was a stand-alone option from the factory...as it definitely was on the 95. The stock class 'option package' rules allow this. This is different from the SP update/backdate allowance which is more lenient. I don't think a ti without an LSD would be that great to autox though, unless you can keep that rear inside wheel on the ground somehow. __________________ Andy Chittum - Mad Man Motorsports | | | 08-19-2006, 11:38 AM | #6 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Posts: 12 | Quote: Originally Posted by andy Well, you can add an LSD, as long as it was a stand-alone option from the factory...as it definitely was on the 95. Ive been in STS/FSP the whole time Ive autox'ed so I havent paid strict attention to the stock rules. Thats certainly going to be a problem then. Ive been looking everyday online for these cars and they're not that easy to find, especially a 96 w/ sport package. I check autotrader, ebay, here, and bimmerforums daily. Anywhere else I should be looking? | | | 08-19-2006, 11:18 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Halethorpe, MD Posts: 1,028 | Quote: Originally Posted by andy I don't think a ti without an LSD would be that great to autox though, unless you can keep that rear inside wheel on the ground somehow. | Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I haven't really had a problem with that wheel leaving the ground. I've got Eibach springs with stock shocks and sways and I've rarely had any problems with the rear at all. Only on very cold or very wet days does the rear become much of a problem. | | | 08-20-2006, 09:41 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: San Juan Capo, CA Posts: 216 | Quote: Originally Posted by 1996 328ti Swapping your diff to a LSD will put you in another class, or I you already no longer in a stock class? | thats what i did ... but my car had the option to have an lsd, mine just didnt ... but i went with an e30 rear end ... lower gearing ... better to drift with __________________ 96 318ti:cat back magniflow, m3 body kit, projector headlights, m3 tails, moded ecu chip, intake, short shifter, highflow cat, front strut, upgraded audio system | | | 08-21-2006, 05:31 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: Oakland, baby! An LSD's benefit really is dependant on the rest of the suspension; if you can get it stiff enough (using stock rules) then it may not be such a hinderance. My '72 2002tii autox car was great without an LSD on Asphalt, but sucked on concrete. That's the opposite of what you'd expect because grip is better on concrete. But that's the experience I had; same suspension as the ti. __________________ Andy Chittum - Mad Man Motorsports | | | 08-25-2006, 11:30 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Muncie, Indiana Posts: 1,551 | Quote: Originally Posted by andy I don't think a ti without an LSD would be that great to autox though, unless you can keep that rear inside wheel on the ground somehow. | I have this problem my ti as well.
