Arrow CHiPs

Probably going to be chipping my baby this summer, looking for any and all info. I haven't really heard all that much besides Conforti and Dinan. When I go to TMS to look for conforti it doesn't seem like any of them are made for my OBDII 97 318ti... What are the best chip ideas for my car? Suggestions?

That's the only one that I can readily find info for, at least concerning my ti, so I guess that's my vote as well... even though I've never even been in a car that had one

Anyone else?

Depends on the chip and what you are running with it... Dinan gives figures for what their different upgrades do... try searching for it on google, look for their official site. They have PDF files with graphs and stuff for their performance info.

Thanks for the site

I'm surprised no one else seems to have much info on chips... any response to the Conforti question? Do they make it for my engine?

I would have to check my old emails, but I think Messr. Conforti finished his M44 software in 1998 but just hasn't yet released it, I suspect because there has not been enough demand.

Am I misreading the 'techniquetuning' graphs or are they showing roughly a 2-3% gain in torque and horsepower? You could see that amount of change trying different fuels or jettisoning a passenger.

That graph didn't impress me either. I'm putting my money elsewhere.

Although the graph doesn't look that impressive, if you look at technique tunings other products and look at their customers, they don't seem like a company that would half ass something. I can't speak from experience since I have never even sat in, let alone drive a chipped 318, but TT definately seems to be at the top of their game. Dinan just seems to be mediocre and overpriced IMO.

Yea, and I think the numbers dinan puts out aren't very good either...

From www.dinanbmw.com, for m44 318ti's:

Price:
D900-193
$299.00

Labor Units: 5.0
Emission Status: 50 State Emission Legal
Peak Horsepower Gain: 5 @ 6000 rpm
Peak Torque Gain: 4 lb/ft @ 6000 rpm
Point Value: 2

Dinan Performance Engine Software unleashes more power by re-programming the fuel mixture and ignition timing parameters of the engine management system. Furthermore, the software safely raises the rev-limit, giving your BMW a broader power band and greater road speed potential in each gear. Significant gains are also achieved at part throttle, making extra power available where you spend the bulk of the time driving. The top speed governor has also been eliminated, enabling the vehicle to achieve it's "natural" top speed.

5hp, while not insignificant, is not what I expected from upgrading engine software... on other cars I've heard of it making quite a difference.

When I bought my car my dealer told me that all Dinan upgrades do not void warranty, or are covered by it, or something like that... maybe that's why they're conservative with their alterations of the engine software?

I didn't find anything in the graphs that make me doubt what you say. It just appears that "chipping" an M44 does not bring significant gains until you further modify to the car.

You might want to consider using the "For Sale" section

haha, no worries, but don't hijack my thread

I'm trying to figure out the best engine software options for an m44 here.
