Getting a persistent P1174 code and have checked for vacuum leaks replaced SAP plastic crossover pipe that goes from SAP pump to the valve. Cleaned IACV and it moves as freely as it should but I failed smog for a pending P1174 fault. I also have new OEM o2 sensors. So at this point I'm pretty sure it's the CVV. Thus I'll replace that when the replacement arrives. However, my other issue is the idle, when warm it's close to 1,000 rim at idle and not the normal 700 to 800. But it eventually drops down most of the time but so slow it's bothersome. Was also thinking that could add to the P1174 returning now and again. Any thoughts on how to resolve all this on my 97 ti? Have you replaced the rivets on Sap? If any misfire codes, that would help confirm vacuum leak. If you take the upper mani off you can inspect vacuum lines. Brake cleaner leak check might be worth a go too. | | | 09-20-2015, 09:34 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | No vacuum leaks found with propane or brake cleaner. No leaks on SAP ether and not a single misfire or code beyond the P1174. But idle is still very high and now just got a code of P0505. Most everything I've read says it's the IACV needs replacing, but I am just not sure. I do know that the idle when warmed up fully is still way to high. Thoughts? | | | 10-26-2015, 01:33 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | I think i finally got it. Though all of my normal ways of tracking down a vacuum leak didn't work, turns out that is what it was. Or at least appears to be. Used Berrymans Chemtool this time sprayed around and found nothing wrong. Then sprayed around injector #4 and the engine stumbled. Did it a few times and the same occurred. Initially hoped that the rebuild of the vacuum tree was the cause as I used fuel line and ordered a replacement tree assembly from AutohausAZ.com and pulled the upper intake and replaced the tree. Re-assembled and still the same stumble. So removed the intake again and removed the injectors and low and behold, #3 AND #4 lower o-rings were hard as rocks. Replaced all four to be safe, a little dielectric grease and reassembled. Got her started, perfect idle and no more leaks! So if the CEL stays off for the week, I should be able to get her to pass smog on Saturday morning! | | | 10-28-2015, 03:42 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | Another update: as you have read above, I had P0505 and P1174 codes and after a lot of tracing, replaced the ICV and CCV, finally found that injector 4 was having a problem sealing. Removed the fuel rail, then injectors and found the O-rings on 3 and 4 were hard as rocks. Replaced the O-rings and the vacuum tree and all is well thus far and so far no codes have returned. However, the issue that is happening (this is an automatic too) that when slowing to a stop the engine surges and then returns to normal idle. I cannot seem to find anything that can be the cause. All vacuum lines appear okay and it runs great, but this surge is a pain in the butt. Any insight is greatly appreciated. | | | 10-28-2015, 06:09 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Laguna Beach Posts: 357 | Try shifting to neutral at stop and see if that changes the issue. My daughters 318i automatic does this. At a stop light it will stumble then surge, seems to be related to the a/c kicking in, but not positive about that. When I get to a stop and shift into neutral, the stumble/surge doesn't happen, in Drive it will do so. Go figure. | | | 10-28-2015, 10:03 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | Don't have the stumble happening and whether A/C is on or not still does the surge. I'll see what happens coming to a stop in neutral, but still want to find the cause/solution. Anyone think the DISA valve could be the issue? Shouldn't be any concern during idle, as that is not what it is there for. | | | 10-30-2015, 01:48 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | Anyone? I know we can live with it and again, hopefully passes smog tomorrow (if the CEL or any codes don't return) but, still, would like to have it gone. | | | 10-31-2015, 07:01 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | Dammit!! P1174 AGAIN! I'm completely stumpted. I've even replaced the throttle position sensor and can't find a leak anywhere. WTH!! Anyone have any idea? Do you have your old ones to swap back in? __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org! Didn't arrive back from my business trip until last night. Hopefully going to be able to get at it this weekend. | | | 11-10-2015, 10:37 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | Same here with knock sensor engine codes. Do the knock sensors fail?
