Mobil 1 5-30 full synthetic is recommended in Bentley which also states that it is one of the few recommended oils by BMW.

In my 95 TI I use Mob1 15w-40, according to my manual the original oil was non synthetic in 95 and was a 10w30. I get it in 5qt jugs at Walmart for 20 bucks. I buy a Standard Auto Products filter which is a reboxed Mann filter.

Antifreeze mismatch is very subtle. By the time you know something is wrong its really really wrong. Might take a month or 6...

Anual flush is basic maintenance on Aluminum engines.
you can go 24 months fi the job is done right , IE BMW coolant, Filtered water, EXACT mix of 50:50 etc.

I'm going to switch mine to waterless coolant shortly so I can run a non pressurised system and don't have any corrosion issues.

www.mobil1.com recommends 0W-40 for a 1998 318ti. The last time I asked the dealership, they said 5W-30. Since it's easier and cheaper to find the Mobil 1 5W-30 around here that's what I've been using. No problems so far.

I've talked to several BMW technicians and they all agree with the owners manual: Do not put any additives in the oil.

Yes, you will have to reset the lights. There is a tool that is made by Peake Research or you can use a paper clip. Just google bmw service indicator reset tool and you should find several sources for various homemade options. I've also heard that some Jiffy Lubes have the reset tools.

20W50 seems so thick. My other vehicles both use 5w20 conventional oil. 2004 RX8, 2007 Jeep Patriot.

The TI engine does not run bearing clearances compatible with the new thin oils.
In about 2001 they changes the SAE bearing spec and lubrication specs to get mileage up.
The cut many main and cam bearing clearances in half when they did it.

It wont destroy your motor in a week or two. It just allows for more wear over the long haul ,, in a lot of engines it would require many many miles to tell. My M42 tells instantly,, the dealer put the 10-30 in and my engine sounded like it was full of rocks. The owners manual does not even mention 10-30 until your in sub zero weather and 15w40 was the delivery oil in 1995, and the engine is dead silent with it in there,, I'm sticking with it.... YMMV!

Mobil 1 synthetic, 10-40, year around. Walmart has a good price on it in five quart containers which is exactly what my ti takes with a filter change. I change oil and filter every three to five thousand miles.
