+1 on the items listed above. Did anybody check into the camshaft sensor? This might be the cause of the stalling and rough idle.

1998 318ti's got an EPA 10 year unlimited mileage warranty because of a bad cat design.

Is there any official documentation that I could read up about this?
My 98 ti passed smogged, but my tech said that the cat wasn't running at its optimal. I wouldn't mind getting my cat replaced and get a couple extra mpg.

EDIT: nevermind. found it.

If you mean scanned to check for codes, that won't neccessarily tell you if the o2 sensors are working correctly. If they're the original parts, they're 12ish years old. They may still be working, but not as well as they should be. My understanding for testing these is that you have to take them off the car and hook them up to an oscilloscope. The M42 only has one sensor, right? It might be worth it to replace it anyway.
