Default weird engine noise...

When I start up the car cold, it seems like the engine is fine...but like after driving it around for a while...a engine noise somehwat rattling bothers me...then after you go idle for about 10 mins...the noise goes away again...any ideas?

Make the radio louder. It sounds like the VANOS. The noise goes away once the oil starts circulating. It is pretty normal.

depends on whether the rattle is coming from INSIDE the cat or the heat shield AROUND the cat. former, replace cat (as the catalyst is breaking up inside). latter, put some screws through the heat shield tapped into the cat itself.

have you located the sound of the rattle for sure yet? does it do it continuously once it starts such that you'd be able to track it down?

if it's the cat heat shield, you can search on the forums for something like "cat heat shield" and you should pull up some good threads.

my car was just diagnosed but i'm still skeptical about it...they said it's the timing chain...i didn't have it checked at the dealer...do you guys really think they diagnosed it right? how much do you think the repairs will cost (parts and labor)? is it still safe to drive it under the circumstances?

is the person you took it to a bmw specialist? i'd get a second opinion i think. how many miles on your car? if you truly need to replace your timing chain (can't imagine - i have 212k on mine and it's fine), it may be expensive. did they give you an estimate? perhaps if it's timing chain related, they just need to replace the timing chain tensioner?
