Default Remote locking and unlocking doors

Hi everyone, I am a newbie from New Zealand and recently purchased a 1998 318 Ti which came with 2 keys/remote which from the outside look identical.
Each key has two buttons, one round with BMW logo for locking and one rectangular for unlocking. One key works fine but the other will not lock or unlock the doors even though the LED lights up. From what I can gather I need to "initialize" the spare key but there was no manual supplied with the car. There is no alarm fitted as far as I can tell. Hoping someone can help.

It is a way to "initialize" it... im not 100% sure about how to do this...
But i think its like this... You get in the car close all the doors... put the key inn and turn it as far as possible without starting the car, then u press the big button on the key (the button for locking the car) and hold it down for about 10secounds, the car should lock/lock up... then stop pressing the button and take out the key...
go out of the car and see if it works...

Im not 100% sure this is right... If it wont work, try just turn the key to first possition befor u press and hold the button...

good luck =)

are you saying you have buttons on your keys instead of a key and separate remote? because that wasn't available in 98 I don't think, at least not in the US

Hi tiFreak,
Yes I have two buttons on the key.(lock and unlock) I think the separate remote was supplied when there is an alarm is fitted. I do not have an alarm.

^ no, I have an OEM alarm with a separate remote that even has "BMW" printed on it, I'm just going to say that it's a US/Euro spec thing, idk if the dealer would be able to tell you how to do it, they may just want to do it themselves just so they can charge you

To Fagerheim,
Thanks for your interest. I look forward to hearing the comments from your workshop mates. Be careful don't let them charge you. Cheers.

Does anyone know if remote locking/unlocking was standard on Euro spec cars after a given date? I'm quite surprised that apparently my '00 M-Sport doesn't seem to have remote locking

Given that it was an option (305) on the German price list, I rather doubt it, but nothing would have stopped a subsidiary from ordering it in on all their cars. (I wish I could tell you more, but the only RHD models we see passing through here are bound for Asia and Oceania.)

they didn't ship with alarms either, which is frankly bizarre for a car costing as much as it did at the time... apparently all the alarms on UK tis were retrofitted.

Along with marketing calculations, there might have been regulatory reasons for that. The U.S. also didn't get the factory alarm system, and instead got a dealer installed BMW/Alpine unit using a different, FCC-approved part of the radio spectrum.

aha
well, it's annoying nonetheless, the BMW specialist where I take my car can do nothing with the system and advised me to contact the original alarm fitter, I have done so and it's gonna mean about a £150 outlay for new transmitters, recoding and gas money for a 150 mile round trip. It'll be worth it though, it's safe enough where I live but I don't like the thought of her being undeadlocked, immobilised or alarmed when I have to take her up to the capital, especially as I have to visit some fairly rough districts.

Plus I keep forgetting to lock her manually because I'm pressing the LED button on the keyfob and walking away! I am so used to keyless on my previous cars...

oh well, I knew I was gonna spend a lot of money on this car when I bought her, I just didn't think it was gonna be on servicing and key fobs! By now I should have at least a K&N and some bass, haha
