Smile ashtray:out ???:in?

Ive decided that i want to remove the ashtray and lighter socket from just in front the gearstick. i dont smoke and to be honest its a bit gross. the housing surrounding the ashtray and lighter looks like it might just pop out.

what could i put there? has anyone done this and put a custom i-pod cradle in there or something else useful to a non-smoker?

i found out that my car was ordered when new with the "smokers package" so what would have been there is it was not ordered with this package? can i order something different from my local dealership?

any ideas would be much appreciated.

Dave.

I removed both the ashtray and lighter. The lighter was moved to the area below the shifter. As for the space, i put a foam pad base in there, and use the space for my wallet and glasses.

Ron Stygar has oil temp/pressure & a voltmeter there, look pretty neat I think.

ipod cradle would be cool if you could intigrate it so it looks part of the car.

the other option (from the factory) was just a plain storage bin.

i've been trying to figure out where to put everything too (additional switches - relo'd cali top switch, brake light kill switch if i do one - ipod cradle [possibly under the new arm rest i just got]). haven't come up with a good scheme yet

if memory serves, the ash tray insert lifts out and then you have a couple screws underneath. the big trick comes in disconnecting the plug that goes to the lens for the lighter (that provides the light in the ring around the top). don't break it! we haven't been able to find the necessary part number yet take a look in my gallery ... forget if i classified it as a "problem" or what.

A simple solution is to just pull the lighter, put in the factory plug and use for accys. or, plug in a map light.
As for the ash tray, on the 95 it is small and the insert pops out and I keep a small garage door opener in there
and just flip the lid and push the button!

there are two screws under the actual ash tray part. disconnecting all the ligher parts are kinda difficult...or at least the illumination one. i actually used a 12 volt dc power socket from auto zone instead of the actual lighter...its basically a lighter with the little rubber cap...that way its closed, but doesnt have the lighter in it since i dont smoke.

i actually just ditched the illumination wire...and just used the power and grounds...note to relocate the lighter, you mus make a wired extension using spade connectors and more wire to make it reach.
