I bought a 96 318ti Hatch-back w/10K miles for my daughter. This car has already modified with very loud exhaust system, so I took a BMW specialized garage near by, and ask them to modify more quiet with not spending much. Basically they changed rear muffler w/tail (nice chrome) for about $250. But it sounds almost same and still very loud. I have not look entire exhaust system on my car, but I suspect that previous owner might remove the front muffler because loud (even vibration) comes from right center underneath of car. Anyway, I am looking for a solution of making it very quiet. I looked around website and Bosal exhaust system may be the choice, especially with the price around $400. But I don't know how this sounds, I am afraid it may be still loud. Also, I don't know it is easy to replace or not. | | | 02-17-2006, 07:50 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Hinsdale, IL. Chances are you'll want a whole new cat back (cat convert to tail) replacement. For quiet performance, supersprint all the way but it will cost you a bit. Try www.bmpdesign.com and www.leatherz.com. The aluminized steel unit does ok by most and you don't have to modify the rear valance to fit a dual pipe tip. Sometimes it hangs a bit off center like my stock one does but can be coerced to hang straight if you insist. Only 10k miles on that sucker? Is that right? Great find, but does it smell like little old lady inside? __________________ My Former Rides 1999 318ti Alpine White, Cali Roof, Dinan goodies 1996 318ti Hellrot California Edition | | | 02-17-2006, 08:06 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | Gen, where are you located? A stock exhaust system will be quietest, I would post in the WTB to see if someone has an old one. I think Planatos has one up for grabs, and another member in PA (I'll have to check my PMs). You'll want to make sure it has the cat too (but with 10k miles, it's unlikely it's not there). Another thing to check are the heat shields. When they come off, they tend to rattle against the exhaust very loudly. Just slide an arm under when the car is cool and try and wiggle them around. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 02-17-2006, 08:16 PM | #6 | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: Dublin, CA Posts: 5 | Woops, my mistake, it is 100K. My location is San Francisco east-bay (Dublin, CA) Thank you | Gen, Welcome to the group and I hope you have had luck with the exhaust. I don't know if you are using M-Service in W.C. or not, but they are expensive and do NOT do many specialty mods. I have a wrench in Benicia: Palo Vaz, Benicia Motorworks 707.747.9753 and he has done WAY too many mods on my 95. Wish I had kept my stock pipes for someone like you. Oh well. Still I hope she has fun with it, I know she will, and feel free to post your concerns.
