ok so maybe the cable is loose or frayed? or maybe needs to be replaced?

I see the same thing in heavy rain or snow. Not that neither of those should effect anything, but that's when it happens. I'd like to know what's going on here myself. Anyone had any experience with this?  __________________

There is no cable.
The E36 cluster is notorious for being intermittent and/or dying completely.
Normally, when this happens, all the gages die, but the odometer still works correctly, as is the case in my car currently.
If this is what is happening to your car, you may have to find another cluster (like the nice one I have- hint, hint) and replace it.

my old truck had this EXACT problem
went crazy for 2 weeks, then just stopped working..
it's either the cable (i'm not sure if they have one), or the cluster.. see J!M's post __________________
