Default speedometer not working

i just bought a 96 ti with m3 swap a few days ago, and the speedometer and odometer stopped working.... ive read some other posts and need some help figuring this out, i think i read that the sensor is in the differential and not the tranny? can anyone help me out???

yes, it's right in the top middle of the diff cover.

ok so maybe the cable is loose or frayed? or maybe needs to be replaced?
it was actually going crazy ealier going all the way up to 160 just sorta bouncing around doing oddball things. i havnt got a chance to look at it yet but any ideas as to what it could be so that i can check everything out....fuses maybe too?

I see the same thing in heavy rain or snow. Not that neither of those should effect anything, but that's when it happens.

I'd like to know what's going on here myself. Anyone had any experience with this?

There is no cable.

The E36 cluster is notorious for being intermittent and/or dying completely.

Normally, when this happens, all the gages die, but the odometer still works correctly, as is the case in my car currently.

If this is what is happening to your car, you may have to find another cluster (like the nice one I have- hint, hint) and replace it.

If the odometer and speedometer are the only things not working, the sender (in the diff) is most likely bad.

cool, im at work right now and will look at it later, but as like the rest of my car, it also has the M3 cluster, but everything else is working properly just not the speedo and the odometer/trip.... thanks for the help so far, ill let ya know what it is when i get a chance to look at it

I HAVE

my old truck had this EXACT problem

went crazy for 2 weeks, then just stopped working..

it's either the cable (i'm not sure if they have one), or the cluster.. see J!M's post
