Welcome,,, if your totally new to the 318 then you should do a lot of reading in the forum and search a round a lot, there are 3 or 4 personality quirks to the TI you want to be aware of.

Rule #1 - NEVER EVER not even for a minute drive a TI with the temperature gauge past the center position. It will harm the head and engine in general.

Good Luck!

Dave

Cheers everyone.

Especially Mr motorhead. The car has a few of the standard e36 niggles. Dodgy starting to spin ignition barrel, drivers window jumps off track. Are the main 2 .

But also the cooling system isn't as it should be.. driving it home (170 mile trip) the temp guage was rock solid on exactly half way. But the heater was only blowing Luke warm. I've topped it up and tried bleeding it but the bottom hose still seems air locked and the heater is no better.. I'm going to pull off the pipes to the heater core and try back flushing them with a hose pipe.today. on a side note the system dosnt seen to presurise enough. I.e. the pipes get hot but not hard..

I've had a 328i coupe in the past so I'm already aware that the BMW rep for reliability isn't always earned..

Thanks again.

Simon

The thermostats on the M42 and M44 are kind of a weak design, they stick and often in the wide open position which makes the heater suck and the car run too cool. The temp should be straight up at 1200 all the times. The BMW does not run high pressure in their system, I think its like < 15 lbs... I have had to change the thermostat on my 95 about every 2 years. I use the BMW coolant, its got a better additive package than most products and protects the aluminum...

Cheers
Dave

There is a thread on here about that issue, that would be a sign the stat is ok. My heater goes stone cold when the stat dies...

The heater can get air in it and not bleed, I have found that water wetter from Redline will make the thing bleed air out better. If the heater valve is working...

I didn't put that very well in the last post Dave.. apologies.

When I said it warms up quick enough I was refering to the engine going off the temp guage.. when the guage sits at 12 after a few miles the heater is as you say stone cold..

The valve on the heater control is working I think, as turning it from hot to cold with the fan on full, gives a slight but discernable temp change if you hold your hand over the vent.

Shops open soon so ill POP out and get a new thermostat.

This has been a great welcome to the forum.. very friendly and helpful.

Cheers Dave and everyone else..

Simon.

She's a beauty! Shiny paint and the interior looks clean too. You got that sporty steering wheel too that isn't stock or optional equipment on the US models. Very nice!
