The interior cover you are trying to remove should come right out. Be careful around the speaker grill area. Just get in there and pull on it...there are no fasteners.

Thanks Sean! Just about warm enough to head out!

Edit:

Went out and the interior pieces came off without hitch. Got the rear shocks in just before it started snowing hard.

I like the Mason bars, but they are pricy. All the no-name rear bars work well. X-braces for sure. IMHO, the Turner front bar is good, the Mason is better.

That depends on the rear sway or lack thereof. 400-500 with rear sway and 600-800 without is where I would start.

How much shorter are they or how much do they lower the car? I have a loose set of CS springs I can dig out and measure if you have something to compare them to.

I would be interested to know if you think these rates are similar with a significantly lightened setup and some rear wing. I was looking at ~700# rears with a sway bar for our chump car. My aim was to eliminate some of the undesirable toe kinematics from the rear of the car.

Stock rear bar is installed for now but was recommended to remove it so will remove, my car is s50 swapped with battery moved to trunk, 3.23 medium case lsd I'm going to build my own coils with parts I already have. So far I have koni single top adjustable front and rear from tc kline with h&r race and looking for Springs to pair with my setup I gets no traction out of turns now spin fest. Tires are 225 45 17 all around 200 Treadwear rating

I'm sure a most of the upgrades listed here are intended for either street or road course use, but what would be some good upgrades for drifting? I know an angle kit, for sure, and I have one picked out, but beyond that? Clueless. I am new to BMWs, and I'm coming from Asian cars and big American trucks, so I don't know all the sites to look at for parts.

I know this is an upgrade FAQ but an't find any information regarding the normal & M-technik suspension.
They might count as an upgrade for some. ( i need to get the car normal so it can get through customs )
The ti i recently bought came with JOM screw suspension installed but the original M-technik suspension minus one front shock was included in the sale.
I still have new normal front shocks i wanted to put on my previous ti, but no normal springs.

So now i'm wondering if i can use the M-technik springs with normal shocks?

And are there part# available for the springs?

The springs i have measure 325mm / 225mm. With "HH BMW 10 90 287" stamped on the front spring.

I'm also interested. Both size & how much they lower the car.
Some sort of part# (stamped on the end of the coil) would be great also.

I'm confused about how the different shocks and springs offered by various manufacturers measure up against each other.
So i've decided to make a list of struts/shocks/springs/coilovers and their data in an effort to clear this up.

Gathered from RealOEM.com:

Standard (00-00)
Front Shock: 31311091773 / 31311091774
Front Spring:
Rear Shock: 33521091629
Rear Spring:

M-technik (S704A) (??-??)
Front Shock: 31311090715 / 31311090716
Front Spring:
Rear Shock: 33521091630
Rear Spring:

NATIONAL VERSION EASTERN EUROPE (L816A) or Poor Road Package (S815A) (??-??)
Front Shock: 31311091623 / 31311091624
Front Spring:
Rear Shock: 33521091999
Rear Spring:
Uses standard sway bars & bushings?
Uses additional spacers & different upper spring pad rear.

Who makes and what size sway bars should I use?
  • BMW stock Sway Bar Front 25mm: 31351091632 Rear 14mm: 33551091621
  • BMW M-technik Sway Bar Front 26mm: 31351091308 Rear 16mm: 33551090317
  • H&R Front Sway Bar - E36 (not M3) 28mm
  • H&R Rear Sway Bar - E36 318ti 18mm
  • Turner Motorsport E36 325i/328i/M3 Front Sway Bar 30mm?
  • Racing Dynamics?
  • AC Schnitzer(used to, not sure if it still made)

- Europe Only Eibach(need this confirmed)

Eibach makes (made?) Performance Stabilizer Bars for the e30/e36 sedan, coupe and cabrio + M3.
I guess the e36 sedan front can be used for the compact but the e30/36 rear probably won't?

Does anyone know how the Standard, M-technik & Poor Road Struts/Shocks/Springs differ from each other?
Height, damping and spring obviously, but how exactly is this achieved and how much do they differ?
Most manufacturers have struts/shocks that support all engine models, others distinguish between 316Ti/318Ti & 323Ti/318TDS, because of the engine weight?
Some have struts/shocks that support both Standard & M-technik, that is right?
Would that mean you could have M-technik shocks with a normal sway bar and vice versa?

I could not find any part# for coil springs from RealOEM.com.
There is however mention of a white and red rear coil spring, which have different lower spring pads.

Both the Standard and M-technik sway bars have identical geometry, and differ only in diameter?

What is the x-brace? Where do I get it?
The "x-brace" is a cross reinforment brace that helps to connect the front crossmember to the front subframe rails. It is stock on all E36 convertibles (including Z3's) and the '95 M3 LTW. Although it was not stock on the E36 coupe, sedans and compacts it does improve chassis rigidity and handling if added... -courtesy of understeer.com
After reading this, I salvaged a x-brace from the junkyard. Unfortunately, it doesn't bolt onto my 96 318ti. The holes in the front subframe are not threaded.... D:

I know this a few months old, but you need to use a riv-nut or similar insert in those holes.
