Carbon Fiber Hoods

Hey guys, as you may or may not know, I am getting 5 CF hoods imported at a discount from China (OEM of VIS). I haven't tested fitment or anything, but they're getting here on Thursday. Wayne (Isis07) is coming up to help me get them so if anyone in the MD/DC/VA area is interested, I can have him bring one back for you to save on shipping.

Please let me know today if you're interested.

The hoods are $480 a piece, and feel free to give Wayne a tip for driving it down to you

If you're around the NJ/NY/PA region, I have the rest (3 available). I'm happy to let you pick up from my house in Stockton, NJ on the NJ-PA border or at my apartment at Rutgers-New Brunswick.

I would estimate the hoods weigh around 20 lbs.

No idea, I only put it next to my hood and looked good. I won't have time to fit till next week when I can get home again.

Also, I don't think this is the VIS oem like I was told... they don't look exactly the same. They still look great though... just different. They applied some sort of undercoating to the bottom side against the engine (I suspect to keep heat down or something).

Fitment is very good. Got it right the first time in my car, Wayne's needs a little adjustment with the front springs. Mine is almost flush with the fenders, his is a few mm-- but they will both be perfect after we tweak them a little bit. A little bit of drilling needed to get the washer jets to fit perfectly (the outside hole is perfect, the inside needs to be opened up a little bit so the nipple fits. Also drilling a little bit for the two springs at the front needed to be done to allow the bolt to go through. All of the screw points are pre-drilled though.

get some roundels on there, they sell CF look ones on eBay that look really cool on the hood

I was really hesitant about these hoods because of the bad CF hood experiences that were posted up almost immediately after we ordered them but so far I'm really pleased with it. I've never really gotten to take a look at a CF hood up close but the weaving looks really cool and as Pat stated, the fit on these things were great and better than either of us were expecting.

I'm pretty impressed with the fitment too. Looks like you guys made out good. I was also worried for you when the whole Seibon thing went down last week, but I had it in the back of my mind that Seibon is a completely different company than VIS. Glad everything worked out, I was starting to wonder if they got lost in transit or something, lol.

Good idea. That's damn cheap. Ridiculously cheap. Almost all CF hoods have a little blemishing-- that's just an unfortunate part of the manufacturing process. Just like clothes, they fray. I still haven't decided whether to paint mine. Definitely not in the near future as I can't afford it now, but it's nice that it's always an option down the road. They're definitely very strong and light.

Since you have some more sitting around, can you weigh one of those and your stock hood? Not sure if weight was already mentioned in the other thread about this. Thanks..

Sorry-- not home now. I'll weigh the next time I'm home. All I know is that the stock hood felt more than twice as heavy than the CF one and if not for the sheer size of the hood, it would be easy to carry in one hand. One hood strut easily holds up the CF hood-- and my struts were already weak (my hood would collapse occasionally with slight wind).

how are these hoods in terms of rock chips? i do a lot of highway miles and have a front end that is riddled with nasty rock dings.

do you use the same mounting hardware (latch, hood fittment pegs, bolts?) i know its a ways off but i wont be able to afford one until February after my s52 swap, if you still have one then i will be more than happy take one off your hands

I tend to drive 700-1200 miles a week so I'll find out how it holds up to the rigors of highway travel pretty quickly.

All the mounting hardware is same. Unbolt it from the original, bolt it onto the new hood. As Pat said, he had to do a little drilling on the underside of the hood to get the washer jet nipples to fit through. There's no good place to secure the hoses/wires that run to the washer jets. I'll probably be resorting to a heavy duty tape. Also, we only reattached 1 hood strut since it's able to support the weight of the hood without issue.

I would guess it took us 30-40 minutes to install these on both of our cars and another 10 minutes for me to adjust my hood springs.

i drool over these hoods way too often and hope to hear they hold up well.

I was talking to a local Ti owner that had both of his struts drilled out claiming that you can possibly crack or even snap the hood while attempting to close it. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but its food for thought.
