Default Replacement idler pulleys DASC

I can't get a response from D/A on this, I'm wanting to replace the idler pulleys with with either the standard kit pulleys or something a bit more robust. Any links, part #'s that anyone can point me to?

Thanks ~

Jim at Downing Atlantic is your best bet. Keep calling. Sorry I just sold my kit a year ago and sent both spare pullies to the buyer who immediately sold the kit to someone else. Jim Goodrowe has the pullies or the part numbers. Just keep calling. They are good old boys and might need a little call back to catch them at the shop. Trust me on this. I've been dealing with them for years. If you don't get them, call a different number and ask where Jim is at or someone that can help you. Be creative...

Just wanted to update, Jim got back to me and was super nice. Shipping same day as order, $22.50 / pulley. Best number to call him on is 770-457-2692.

Those pulleys are ****ing garbage. My setup uses one of them and it started squealing within 20 miles. I replaced it with a spare one and now that one squeaks too.

Mine were great 30,000 with no issues. Maybe you had them installed wrong or they had debres getting in them...There is a washer that needs to be behind them or they will fail quick.

Not picking at you just stating my experience.

I also ordered the 2 "red" pulleys from Jim at DA... for spare's, but I'd also like to find some more robust pulleys as well. Maybe something that's not made of composite?

Please post if you got something~

Thanks!

I've had the same problems with my Z3 with the pulley squeaking soon after installing them. The problem is a combination of poor bearing used by Fennel Drive and the pulley spinning a bit too fast... IIRC given the ratio about 5500RPM the pulley spins above the limit for the bearing (15K RPM): the room constraint I guess didn't allow Downing to go with a slightly bigger idler (like the one BMW used for the tensioner). Fennel Drive used some ****ty a$$ bearings: the seal fails quickly and allow dirt to enter the bearing and damages the race. Eventually it will seize...

The bearing in the idler is a standard size (6203-2RSR) and the idler can be easily disassembled. Unfortunately as you push out the bearing the housing deforms and the new bearing won't sit tight anymore.

At one point I've almost had a local machine shop manufacturing a idler out of a block of aluminum to make it serviceable with quality SKF or FAG bearing and be able to go a tad bigger on the idler to slow it down.

I still have the draws of the idler if anyone want to machine them out: http://www.mediafire.com/?y5nnwxum2jn

Nice, I just saw your drawings. What bearing specifically do you recommend? I might be able to source out a machinist for this.
Also is the roller diameter (64mm) in the drawing same as stock? or is this your bigger one?

Thanks!`

I have no technical experience in the matter, so what I know is what I've learned from my father, who is a mechanical engineer. He said the stock bearing is fine, is a matter of the quality of the seal ring that is not there in the one Fennel used. That's why I was suggesting SKF or FAG bearing which are high quality. The type of bearing is 6203-2RSR. You can find them on Amazon and they are cheap.

Here's the technical specs of that bearing: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ygny5t...06203-2RSR.pdf

Give these to the machine shop since they have the specs for the tolerance in the housing so that the bearing fits tight, but you can still service it...

The draws I posted have the measurement of the stock pulley.

Since the bearing are so cheap, my thought was to make the pulley housing in aluminium and replace the bearing every 20K miles just so that you remain on the safe side. Maybe if you go thtough it, I would monitor the bearing the first few thousand miles and assess the condition. It's obvious when it gains play.

If you decide to to make these and sell them I have no problem with it... But if you get overly rich, at least get us a beer...

haha... no worries. Thanks for the info. In a sense, I'm sorta like you, and this is just fun stuff. Think of it as a second wind on your ideas, but still not a high priority (yet)

had a guy in the uk fab me some up after my standard dasc ones exploded on me

and fitted

and this is what happened to the standard one

they weren't exactly cheap but top notch double row bearings have been used etc so didn't mind paying the extra

Very nice!

May I ask how much it cost to make them?
