Then I think the 2nd cylinder is misfiring. I ran carsoft codes, but my descriptions aren't coming up. So the codes that come up are 93, 190, and 194. I know a cylinder is misfiring because the CEL is both on and blinked/flashed. Yesterday, I checked all the plugs and the 2nd plug had condensation on it and inside the plug boot. There was some oil on the outside of the plug with the condensation, but there was NO oil on the area of the plug that goes inside the head. I blew out the plug wire boot and cleaned off the ceramic area of the spark plug and reassembled. The car cranked, idled and drove fine without any misses. However, this morning, I got in the car, cranked it and let it warm up for about 5 minutes. Then I jumped in the car and as soon as I backed out of the driveway it started missing again and the CEL flashed. I pulled back in the driveway, pulled the boot off the 2nd plug, and there is some slight condensation on the boot. But there is no oil on the plug. The plug however seems fouled and there are a couple burn marks on the plug (probably arcing from the boot due to the condensation). Any ideas on what I need to do here? | | | 01-14-2010, 03:46 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Gilbert Posts: 621 | plugs and wires? __________________ *IF ITS FAST AND CHEAP, ITS NOT RELIABLE* *IF ITS CHEAP AND RELIABLE, ITS NOT FAST* *IF ITS FAST AND RELIABLE, ITS NOT CHEAP* | | | 01-14-2010, 03:49 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: atlanta Posts: 145 | I need to change both probably. I changed plugs about 30k miles ago with NGK OEMs, but could use a refresh. The plug is definitely fouled. And I've never changed the wires and I'm at 190k miles. But I can't figure out why some condensation is building up on just this one plug boot. | | | 01-14-2010, 08:34 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: Columbia MD Posts: 215 | Water condensation? From inside the engine? That does sound a bit odd. If the valve cover is leaking oil it will usually cause a misfire only on startup- once the oil burns off (a few seconds) it doesn't usually effect anything else. I would start with a fresh set of NGKs and wires. After that, I would probably move on to the injector(s). But I'm curious about this condensation.... __________________ *Except 318ti '97 318ti M-Sport '95 M3 BMWCCA | | | 01-14-2010, 08:40 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Raleigh/Charlotte, NC Posts: 1,233 | Steam out tail pipe by any chance? __________________ -Jeff | | | 01-15-2010, 09:56 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: atlanta Posts: 145 | I should clarify...there's no condensation or oil on the "electrode" (inside the engine). Trust me, if there was oil or water on the electrode or steam coming out of the tailpipe, I'd be doing a leak down test. However, due to the age of the car and mileage I should probably start doing a leak down test every few months anyway to be safe. There was some slight condensation on the insulator which is what the plug boot is seated to. I went ahead and ordered some Magnecors and will pick up some new NGKs. I'm just wondering if I need to go ahead and replace the coil pack while I'm at it for preventative maintenance or in case the short/arc created due to the condensation or bad wire may have damaged the coil.
