Default Replacing 318ti struts on hatchback

For the second time in the 8 years since I have owned my 96 318ti, the two gas-pressurized struts holding the hatchback lid are failing in the cold weather....and need to be replaced.

However, looking at how the struts are attached to the hatchback lid, I can't figure out how they actually bolt on to the lid. I don't see any obvious sign of a bolt or any sort of means of attachment.

Anyone have an idea ? Thanks.

There is a clip that pops out at the top end. Then you can remove the strut.
It will be obvious once you pop out the clip.
The new one comes with new clips, I think.

DO NOT REMOVE BOTH STRUTS AT THE SAME TIME!

I would suggest having someone hold the hatch open or prop it up when replacing the struts. And it is normal to hear something sliding in them.

And look at

for part numbers.

Default Thanks, Steven !!

I really appreciate the help - off to the BMW dealer on Monday to hopefully pick up the struts.
