Canada Posts: 465 | A Pic of of my Stick (Full M3 Tranny Swap) It's been a long time coming.....The slushbox is finally gone and in its place is a much more worthy ZF e36 m3 unit transplanted from a 99 m3 garage queen turned straight-cut gear track star with only 16,000 miles on it. Its an absolute overkill right now, but it allows for future power upgrades, plus I can drop the m3 clutch at redline and think nothing of it I also had a UUC SSK thrown in while I was at it. Next step is to change the diff...I'm currently running the stock auto 4.44 diff which makes 5th gear absolutely ridiculous; I’m redlining at about 160 km/hr . I'm selling off the Auto unit if anyone needs a replacement, I’ll be posting it up in the "For Sale" section soon. __________________ | | | 01-11-2006, 12:21 AM | #2 | doesn't care about you. If I have a chance to talk to him, I'll ask him how he did it. __________________ | | | 01-11-2006, 02:07 AM | #4 | doesn't care about you. When my autobox blows I will do a swap. | | | 01-11-2006, 08:16 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Vancouver, B.C. I’ve only had the swap for a couple of days now but I can already tell you that it was well worth the money in terms of increasing the fun-to-drive ratio. It feels like I’m driving an entirely new car. I’ve always been driving cars with manual transmissions so having an autobox in my Ti has been the one hindrance that I’ve wanted to change about it since it was new. Now I just need more power! __________________ | | | 01-11-2006, 09:50 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Quad Cities, Iowa Posts: 2,110 | How much did it cost to have him put it in and how long did it take? | | | 01-12-2006, 01:06 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Vancouver, B.C. The complete swap, including the short-shift-kit, which was extra, cost me a little over $4,000 Canadian (approx. 3,500 USD). __________________ | | | 01-25-2006, 07:50 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Tacompton, WA Posts: 309 | did you already have an M3 engine in your car? or do you need an M3 engine to put in a m3 tranny? __________________ 95 318ti Alpine white, E46 m3 front bumper, Clear Corners, Cosmo CAI, k&n filter, Flowmaster catback, front strut bars, sony 12" sub Kenwood 800watt amp & Aiwa Deck, stickers Future: Angel Eyes, Drop, Rims, and rear bumper 318ti.org sticker (added 100HP) | | | 02-01-2006, 12:34 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Vancouver, B.C. You don’t need to have an m3 engine to install an m3 tranny. __________________ | | | 03-06-2006, 05:24 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Tennessee Posts: 523 | Wouldn't that hurt the cars speed with the M3 tranny weighing more than the stock tranny? A 5-speed M44 tranny would be cheaper than the M3 tranny right? __________________ | | | 03-13-2006, 05:33 AM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Hilliard, Ohio Posts: 122 | There's almost zero weight difference between the ZF and the Getrag gearboxes. Both are about equal in price for used parts as well. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
