The M42(92-95 E36) was used in the E30 too(1990-1991), so I don't see why your friend couldn't use it. I think the intake was changed for the E36 though, so it may not fit in the E30, and you would probably need a different ECU.
Probably cheaper for you to buy an M42 out of a wrecked E30 or from someone doing an M50 swap and get the E30 intake, wiring harness, + ECU with the motor.
Someone on R3V has probably done an M42 swap, but most folks who bother with E30 motor swaps put in some variant of the M50. You may want to ask around there about M42 swaps and any for sale.

Finally, the M42 engine was modified slightly (mainly in the inlet manifold design) and fitted to the E36 318iS. It was subsequently developed into the M44 engine. . .
