Default Windshield Wipers Get Stuck

Hey all!

I'm new here and I'm trying to figure out an issue I am having with my 1997 BMW 318ti. When I activate the windshield wipers by pushing up on the windshield wiper stalk, the windshield wipers begin to work but after a few minutes they just get stuck in the middle of my windshield. Once they are stuck, the only way to get them unstuck is to restart the car. Sometimes it even takes a couple restarts for the wipers to get unstuck. If I manually operate the wipers by pressing down on the windshield wiper stalk, the wipers occasionally get stuck, but I can get them unstuck by pressing down on the windshield wiper stalk.

I have done some research and I believe it may be either the wiper motor or the wiper relay/module. Opinions?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much,
Mike

The wiper motor has an internal contact for wiper in park or not in park position.
The contacts could be dirty and may need cleaning.

Thanks so much! I'll give it a try! How difficult would you say it is to properly check the wiper motor internal contacts? Unfortunately, I'm not very mechanically inclined.

Motor replacement fixed the problem. (don't forget to index the linkage) After plugging in new motor, run it and shut it off, this parks motor. Then when attaching motor to linkage, make sure linkage is in a straight line when bolting crank to motor, then install.
