Default Brake Air Duct

Can someone please explain the purpose of this? I'm guessing it cools the brakes and senses when they are overheating? I need to have it replaced and I'm wondering how important it really is. I don't recall my 95' having this feature but I could be wrong. (my car is a 97') Anyway, it's #20 in the link. Thanks guys. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...58&hg=51&fg=15

I'm pretty sure that there are plenty of people running without the ducts so I'm going to say that they aren't important, I have them and don't think that they really do anything but look kinda cool

I wouldn't worry about it.

the duct itself flows air towards the brakes, but isn't like a kit that has flexible tubing that outlets the air right onto the brakes. as steven said, probably not something to worry about. definitely no sensing of when the brakes are overheating. do you have the onboard computer? if so, what does the outside temp show? if the temp sensor is missing it reports are very odd temp like -40.

true.

it's not the end of the world if you don't have it. I don't know your driving habits but I'm pretty sure you're brakes aren't going to get that hot

hmm, I just have my temp probe zip-tied to the bumper carrier. I always wondered if there was a specifically designed place for it.

I don't have the external temperature feature. I'm going to have the duct replaced because I want the car to remain perfect. Also, The one I'm going to replace is on the passenger side. It doesn't look like a probe to me; more like a flat disc inside the duct.
