Default Who has Replaced............

I'm just curious who has had to put in a new transmission in there car. I want to know if you had a new one put in how many miles were on the car when done. Also if your on your original transmission how many miles do you currently have on your ti? I'm thinking about having my transmission fluid flushed out tomorrow to see if that does anything for me.

As long as yours is misbehaving, getting new fluid certainly might help. Also, I've heard SeaFoam TransTune can help with problems on old transmissions. It might be a good last ditch effort. http://www.seafoamsales.com/transTune.htm

My 96 automatic has 127,400 miles (original transmission) and it seems to still shift good. Bentley lays out a tranny replacement pretty well, but... I think the hardest part about an automatic replacement is getting the correct fluid level. The level has to be checked with the tranny at a specific temperature range. www.pelicanparts.com has a good article about auto fluid changes.

Would you look for a fresh rebuild or a used salvage yard unit?

It sounds like a torque converter problem. As soon as the light kicks on your car starts to run like crap, like really doggy?

If your fluid is bad, it will usually start to slip, does that happen? (revs up but doesn't move while in gear or while changing gears)

BTW...BMW auto transmission come from the factory with "life time" fluid. I don't think it's recommended to flush them. I think the 318ti.net list has deteremined that it should be one of the last things done before actually replacing the tranny.

BMW should be able to pull the codes off your tranny computer for less than $250. That might be a better way to spend the $$.

I explained to the lady my situation and she came back asking me if i had the fluid flushed. I told her no and said i'd give her a call back on an appt. After talking with my dad he's thinking it could be low also,so he said to make the appt. I'm hoping the lights will be on when i get there tomorrow morning,if not i hope it's a hard code so they can still see it.

Is the tranny cooled by the radiaor??

No o don't think so,when the lights on there's a slight hesitation when shifting, slightly ruff but not SLAMMING IN.

This is what i'm gonna do,tomorrow morning when i take it in i'm 1st going to have them check the codes out. My check engine light came on when i was pulling out of work. I want to know what those codes meant before i do anything. 2ndly why would they suggest a transmission flush if you guarantee this fluid for life?? And i have like 50 questions to ask them.

The reason why i was wondering about the radiator and trans is that my car was overheating for about 5 minutes on saturday which could've burned some of the tranny fluid, which could be why the light came on.

As i said earlier my light came on twice this morning and i shut my car off and turned it back on and it was off and car drove fine. Coming home from work it did not go on once and car drove fine,i didn't punch it at all just slightly gave it gas on the hgwy since i was expecting the worse. I went about 70 and my cars rpm's were at 3k which it's normally at. I just hope tomorrow my ASC+T light doesn't come on since we are getting like 5 inches tonight/tomorrow,driving to the dealership won't be fun.

Wait, is your ASC+T light coming on, or your transmission light?

If your ASC+T is coming on, that's WAY different then the transmission light.

Sorry let me clear this up..
Both the ASC+T & Auto trans light come on at the exact same time while driving.

According to the owners manual it says for the AUTO trans light if it comes on while driving to place the car in park once stopped shut off the car, wait a few seconds and turn back on. If light goes out normal driving is occured if light stays on car is basically only using 3rd and 4th gear.

Now when i do this both lights do shut off.

In the back of my head something is telling me it's the computer to the car, something in the engine compartment is out of whack.

The ASC+T and the automatic transmission are seperate from each other, sort of. They are definetly two different systems. It's hard to believe that both systems are failing at the exact same time, right? I'm sure the two systems share at least one sensor (like the wheel speed sensors, brake sensor, rpm, etc...). I would start there. You also mentioned that your check engine light came on as well, I would definetly see what that is, it's probably related to the answer.

Burnt/bad transmission fluid would most likely be noticable all the time. It doesn't sound like that's the case. When mine started going out it did the same thing, both lights would come on at the same time right after a high boost shift.

I'm just saying, I wouldn't spend $250 on a transmission flush. Just get the code read, something will show up.
