Default BMW M44 oil filter housing.

So I have notice the M42 motor set up has a metal oil filter housing, where as the m44 oil filter housing is plastic with the dumb cap.

Has anyone ever changed the filter housings?

M42 filter housing

M44 filter housing

gasket (11421709800)

the gasket is the same for both m4x motors and so are the holes for the screws to mount to.

Any input?

Sorry, I'm on a roll today with my posts. Maybe too much coffee.

The housing on the M44 is metal too. Just the cap is plastic.

I think that you are right though that they would be interchangeable. If one chose to do so....they both seem effectively the same, though internals are different.

its all good with the post. I hate the stupid plastic cap and feels like I am going to break it. So I am going to be seeing if swapping to a M42 filter housing will work. I also think, I could maybe use the M5x cap on the m42 housing for a project I have.

I hear ya. I have an M52 for my project and it has a plastic cap too. You're looking for OBDI style, the M50 looks metal.

Get with the times man! Plastic is in.

Though I too worry about cross threading the dang thing. Maybe it just doesn't do any good to worry about such things?!

However, I think that your plan will work.
