No joy. Yet. I haven't really paid much attention to it other than trying the flex head the other day. I have to wait on a new starter for a week or two anyhow due to funds, so there she sits on stands in my garage. I'm fortunate to have another vehicle so that's fine. Not as nice as the BMW, just basic transportation. I'll probably attack the bolt again tomorrow / this weekend when my buddy comes over. Thanks for being interested. This starter is a real knuckle buster / head scratcher so far. To be continued...

Hey Junk, why the deep socket or stubby extension? I don't have either. Maybe this is why I can't get it to fit on properly... what happened when you tried it without the extension?

Default Update

Old starter removed today!!!! Only took me two months. I might do a write up on this after I'm finished. Having the right tools sure helps.

Default Replace or Rebuild?

Yep. They're Torx. I have a question. Does anybody know if it would be better to rebuild the old starter or replace? The old starter looks original. Made in Italy with BMW stamped on it. The new starter looks kinda generic. The old one is definitely worn out. It spins real easily without much resistance compared to the new one.

I came down with the flu last night and today, so I won't be putting a starter back in for a few days. Just really wondering if I should rebuild the old one instead of using this new generic one.

So here's a pic of the two starters. Should I keep the original and have it rebuilt and take back the generic one?

sorry I have no experience with rebuilding a starter.. interesting, stock one is smaller huh? I think it depends on the condition of the armature inside.. then you have to get the parts somewhere..

hasn't your ti been down long enough?!

I say just throw the generic one in there, if you have to do the starter again.. it'll be a lot faster the second time anyways.. that's how I figured because I installed a used starter!

Well if you want to rebuild the old starter then usually what needs to be replaced is the armature brushes and the Solenoid. Unless something else is wrong with it. Be careful if you are going to replace the solenoid. I ordered one from BMW and the one shipped did not fit my original starter. They changed solenoid types in mid production. It looks the same but it won't fit. I now have a spare solenoid since electrical items that are special orders are not returnable. When I perform my 300,000 mile service I am going to replace the original starter with a rebuilt and overhaul my original starter if I can get the correct parts. If i were you save the old starter. You never now what might come of it.

Good advice guys. The generic starter is going in this Saturday. I'll hold on to the old one and look into rebuilding it in my spare time. It's time to get my car back on the road!

Default Success!

So I bolted up the starter yesterday and finished all the buttoning down today. If anybody has any questions just ask. This was a major pain. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. It is possible. Tired, so I'm going to keep this short.

I ended the day with a wash and wax. It's good to have my car back on the road. My beater is back parked on the street where it belongs. Long live BMW!
