Default Difficult Start...

I have been having trouble getting my car started on cold mornings/nights. Sometimes it will not start at all, other times it will finally fire up after I turn the key to the "on" position three or four times. I've had the battery checked and it turned out to be fine. I've recently done the fuel filter and plugs. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

When you need to prime the fuel pump numerous times by turning the key on and off, that usually is a fuel pressure leakdown problem. Once the car finally starts, does it run smoothly, or does it stumble and run rough for a while?

In general, a car that runs smothly after the prime process has fuel leaking back to the fuel tank, indcating a faulty check valve. This valve is integrated with the fuel pump.

A car that runs roughly after the prime process often hints at a leaky fuel injector. The faulty injector leak residual fuel pressure into a cyclinder, thus creating a flooded start condition (rough).

You might have a leaking fuel line somewhere too.

You can do a fuel pressure test with a store bought fuel pressure tester. A good system will make 43.5 psi when just the fuel pump has been run for 1 minute. (You need to bypass the fuel pump relay to get just the pump to run) It should also hold 2.5 bar (36 psi) after 20 minutes.

This might not explain the no-starts though.....

The car does run smoothly after the prime process. I just purchased the tester but have not yet peformed the test. I'm not 100% convinced that the battery is good. I failed to mention that when I had removed the battery to take it to get tested, I did not immediately put it back in the car. For some reason I brought it in the house overnight. The next day after talking to my local car guy and a technician at the dealer I put the "warm" battery back in and decided to see if it would fire. It started just fine. It seems no one can explain why the cold weather seems to be a factor.

I'm assuming this tester plugs into the fuel rail somewhere?

It happened again this morning, no start at 8:30 come back at 12 and after the prime process, fires right up! Thanks for your input cirrus.
